Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

Just got a Q3 townhall invite for the 15th. Any bets on what tasteless (read NFL stadium) location/ way Sarah the Poet will choose to announce more layoffs? "Happy holidays! Ya'll are gonna be worrying how to keep the heat on while I laugh and celebrate with my family. Fu-k all ya'll."

Don’t donate to united way. If giving back is important to you, find your own local programs to donate or volunteer to. Their charity tax write off isn’t the measly worth a half day off of work. Eye roll.

My last day is December 1st. Glad they gave me the boot. I can’t fu--ing wait to have this bridge burned.

No wonder why this MF!!! Has to laid off good employees. They don’t even want to pay for my internet service usage.
Listen to this!!

“Centene reaches $215M settlement with California
This latest settlement is the largest the payer has announced so far regarding state overcharging allegations. Centene has agreed to pay $805.6 million in settlements so far”

Losing Internet reimbursement but sarah can keep traveling on her private plane and drink her port wine. Centene is full of medicaid/medicare fraud. Document everything to protect yourself.

This organization is showing it's true colors, they talked about women empowerment but Sarah the poet has fired only women because some her cheerleader friends highschool style from HR has told her" I don't like her" or I don't like this other one, but all the guys in the room have zero respect for her and tell her what to do , what masoquist and pathetic place to work for.

So the states that are required by law for Centene to reimburse for technology services to those that work from home will continue to get their stipend merely because they have no choice otherwise they can be sued. For those of us that live in states that do not require it by law Centene has chosen to no longer support those employees after Centene chose to make WFH permanent. They have no reason to no longer support those employees in offsetting that expense. In other words they are making sure they don't pay an extra penny to anyone they don't have to. Pretty pathetic and sends a clear message. This whole leak has really shed a spotlight on how truly morally bankrupt this company is.

“ Presently this is applicable to California as they have not posted a warn notice in CA since 2021. That means they didn't comply for the layoffs in 2022 to present. Not sure about any of the other states where employees were let go but they did not comply. If they reported as stipulated they would be listed.”

The penalty for not posting a Warn notice is…. Paying the employee for a 60 day period.

They are keeping the company from having a permanent record of the layoff by preemptively doing what they have to do if reported and calling it a severance package.

Self Evaluation: Your thoughts? First I have always found these to be very difficult to write to start with. Second does it even matter in the long run? After they stopped PFP this year my PLs have been pushing the learn "all the skills you can to better yourself". I have asked if I train in new areas do I get a pay increase for taking on new job responsibilities and have been met with a resounding NO. In the end it's all about the money for most of us right? I need to pay my bills - if I didn't need to do that I wouldn't need to work correct? I have been trained in FTC, COB, Adjustments and Pricing with no pay increases. I am now expected to do all of that in a different LOB that I got thrown into because they need "assistance" with no training in that LOB and still no additional compensation. AND after they let go thousands of people without disclosing metrics used to decide and some were high performers - why does a self evaluation even matter? I have always been a high performer - always exceeded production - 100% Quality & Accuracy every quarter. Until the last 6 mths when they expected me to learn the workflow for a different LOB BY MYSELF - so yeah my production is not like it used to be. As a person now constantly looking for another company to work for because I am afraid I will be included in the next round of layoffs regardless of my performance I know that these evaluations are just theater and will not help save me from being let go, gain me a promotion, or increase my wages.

Just found out those who stay are losing cell phones, internet stipend, travel closed off, of course bonuses are gone except we just found out manager and above still get their bonuses moving forward. This is confirmation the company is not the same as it used to be. Employees no longer matter, strip much needed resources, teams, lay folks off all to protect profits and bonuses for leadership. I considered myself a lifer before hearing this news but as for me it’s time to shop and get off this sinking ship ……. So sorry for all y’all that lost your jobs but honestly it’s probably a blessing in disguise at this point. Good luck everyone.

Presently this is applicable to California as they have not posted a warn notice in CA since 2021. That means they didn't comply for the layoffs in 2022 to present. Not sure about any of the other states where employees were let go but they did not comply. If they reported as stipulated they would be listed. I would assume you would have to research the laws governing the state in which you work or the state for the line of business you work in as I am not sure how it works entirely.

Was anyone offered to be transferred to a different department or offered one of the supposed 615 open positions they say they have?

https://edd.ca.gov/en/jobs_and_training/layoff_services_warn

An employer must give notice 60-days prior to a plant closing, layoff or relocation. In addition to the notifications required under federal WARN, notice must also be given to the Local Workforce Development Board, and the chief elected official of each city and county government within which the termination, relocation or mass layoff occurs. (California Labor Code Section 1401)

The following situations are exempt from notice:

There is an offer to transfer employee to a different site within a reasonable commuting distance.
(29 USC, 2101 (b) (2); 20 CFR 639.5)

The closure is due to unforeseeable business circumstances, a natural disaster.
(29 USC, 2103; 20 CFR 639.9)

The closing or layoff constitutes a strike or constitutes a lockout not intended to evade the requirement of this chapter.
[29 USC, 2103 (2)]

Sarah doesn't understand the dynamic between corporate and the markets, there was a decent relationship between the two moving in the right direction and she just put a new guy in quality for unknown reasons that is taking things backwards. This company is a mess and it is not getting any better

Sarah has put the worst leadership in place, look at corporate quality, they had great leader doing freaking progress amidst the chaos and she put there a dude that doesn't understand the job, don't have the stamina to do it and that everybody hates. Centene will never recover from that one.

From http://www.forbes.com/sites/brucejapsen/2023/10/24/centenes-reports-469-million-profit-thanks-to-obamacare-growth/amp/

"Centene reported third quarter profits of $469 million as membership in Obamacare plans grew by 1.5 million, the health insurer said Tuesday."

Millions in profits but 2,000 people lost their jobs. Is 13 million per year not enough for The Poet?

No layoffs confirmrd but basrd on Richard Chong's email this morning, I highly suspect more are coming.

As for the internet reimbursement, google your state law. I'm in a state where they are required to reimburse my internet cost. Not saying more than that because big brother is watching.

Voted 2023 best workplace for women! The propaganda level is off the charts. Feeling special ladies? Feeling safe and secure? Maybe ask the woman crying on a call because of all the pressure being dumped on whoever is left and already understaffed. Pathetic treatment. Plus my PLs pleading ignorance of more layoffs, but I know they are lying based on their tells that are so visible when they lie (which I have seen plenty of times sadly).

ummm...what makes you think they laid off people based on performance? If that was a factor I know a few people who were high performers that were let go while under performers are still here. Just because it doesn't make sense doesn't mean they won't do it regardless. Kind of like how they didn't comply with the Warn Notice - they are supposed to report to the EDD - they know they are supposed to - they chose not to. It's a matter of they don't care and no one that has the power to is forcing them to be held accountable.

So we are expected to pay for the internet to make money for Centene?

I am not an independent contractor if they want me to work for them they need to provide the resources for me to do so. They shut down so many physical locations under the guise of "cutting costs because COVID" and made remote work a permanent thing for most employees that don't have to face the public in person. They are just shooting themselves in the foot left and right. My internet keeps going up but their subsidy to offset that expense hasn't. Cheapest greediest company I have yet to come into contact with. I hope I am around to see Centene fall - it will be bittersweet.

Internet reimbursement is going away and they're trying to do away with company phones. Make sure to apply for an exception if you need your phone for regular provider/member contact! Check cnet for policy update 10/23

I find it interesting that today I was somehow selected to train 2 new ppl to my team. Of course I was professional and showed them the correct way to do things but I can't help but wonder why 3 people from my team were previously let go during the August layoff. Why fire people then go out and hire brand new ppl to bring on. What sense does this make? I'll never understand the thought process of how people were selected and honestly I don't want to know. This all just su-ks😞

The new Chief growth officer is certainly more qualified than Sarah L, well anybody out there is easily more qualified than Sarah, but it begs the question are they putting this gentleman in the front page just to Play the race card? Centene has quite a few people with chief titles and they don't show in the front page? What happened to Anika and Dr Vincent is two higher exec is very questionable and this seems more a sign to put a facade of DEI than anything else.

What I have heard is that there are 2 more rounds of layoffs coming by end of year. Medicaid/Medi-cal will be hit the hardest given the numerous lawsuits against Centene for overcharging. Not sure what other lines of business will be effected - nor do I know who as it can be any one of us. It has also been said that PL and management have known about this and have been told not to talk about it. Given the way things have been going the last several months I am apt to believe it.
