Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

The warn act was violated as it was not reported to the state other wise it would be on each state list and the federal list that centene is laying off people and how many per each county. They did not report this to the states /edd which is required by federal laws....

"Honest question. Why are people saying the WARN Act was violated? From what I read, they must give 60 days notice. That's what they're giving, isn't it? What am I missing?

All my best to those affected. I am so sorry for what all of us are going through."

People are posting on here expecting Centene to actually care about them. It's a company. They don't care about you. Your PLcs and other supervisors don't care about you. Your co-workers are exactly that. Co-workers. Not your friends.

So what are the providers saying about these layoffs? This will have them concerned with people making accusations of corruption, denying claims payments and authorizations. This is a cluster!&@

Based on the comments on this forum and other threads, it seems like pregnant women are being let go swiftly. Makes me wonder should women not say they are pregnant to their employer or people leaders to secure Healthcare insurance and pay?

I think if you are expecting keep silent. Even if you are a husband and your wife is expecting stay silent; especially if she is on your insurance plan.

I know we get comfortable and share our lives with other employees and people leaders, but I would caution keep your health conditions private.

If you are calling in sick be vague and don't go into details about pregnancy morning sickness or if you are receiving chemo nausea and vomiting you may have from it.

It appears this company is VERY cut throat and does not care if you are pregnant or may have chronic illness or teminal illness and need your medications. They just look at numbers and if you are a gain or loss for them. Breaks my heart that they consider pregnant women liabilities at this place or someone on fmla. Should we stop our family planning to keep a job? This is NUTS!

I read the COBRA they offer is between $800-$2000/month depending on which option you choose.

Just keep silent, have your resumes ready and don't discuss your personal lives. It's sad that we can no longer feel comfortable or secure here at Centene.

I've been reading this post and comments ever since the announcement to the media. My anxiety will not allow me to sleep well at all. I feel like from what I have read, this is A LOT more than 2k! Is it just my overthinking or anyone else think this too? I am so tired of hearing "you're safe" at the end of the day, no one is safe at this rate. I wonder if they are planning to sell out to the UK investors all together. The fact that good quality people have been let go, and the lack of true reason why each were chosen, aka no transparency. I also do not believe that many Medicaid members will lose coverage. I am baffled that with the prices of everything in this country right now, and the rent going up, insurance rates going up, literally everyone except these Corp big wigs are struggling to even feed themselves. and/or families. Now they want to rip their health coverage too? This is bad for all of us employees and the members of Medicaid and Medicare. boo Corporate America.

You all act like Wellcare is the only company laying people off. CVS laid off 5,000 people. Alerting media and lawyers isnt going to do anything.

Chris Cuomo News Nation should be notified of this absolute slaying of hard workers. We need to create a video chain that captures the financial impact this will have on our families.

I emailed Rachel Maddow at MSNBC, specifically about the WARN Act and sent a link to this board. Why hasn't national media picked this up? This impacts more than just those being laid off. We all know someone that receives Medicare or Medicaid.

Why didn’t anyone get arrested for all of the over charges in Medicaid Pharmacy. With all of the financial set backs, slaying of jobs from employees that won’t ever come close to your Salary Sara why don’t you forgo your salary to keep hard working people employed oh but that would be too honorable. Sara you are selfish, greedy and you’re stupid. I think the late Michael Neirdorff must have been in major duress and you forced him to give you this title you have been here not even 2 years. You are not a CEO. I smell bankruptcy and perhaps federal prison time for you, Drew and anyone else who is involved in this criminal activity.

@7nmq+1oNUjeJa Neither, a Customer Contact Director and Manager were let go today. These are coming from higher. Normally they bring in a team outside of HR that consults with the cuts to make sure they are fair and not biased.

“All state’s affected but Texas?”
Texas has been impacted as well.
A lot of us are on teams that have PLs in Florida but the team consist of employees that are in several different states. Texas being one of them.
For example, my team has a few in Texas one in Missouri and others in Florida

Yes the severance that is being offered is in fact on top of your regular pay which if your last working day is 12/1 you get the last 2 weeks pay + your severance in 1 lump-sum on 12/8.

@7fqb+1oNUjeJa "... the Universe has something better in store for you, you needed that extra push, this is it… it is a blessing in disguise"

This exactly. I was laid off from another healthcare company, no reason -- just my time to go. I would have stayed indefinitely because it was comfortable.

Instead, I got severance time to spend with my newborn baby (nice since I had to work the day after he was born and never had any time off) and then ended up working at Google less than a year later.

Use this time to update your resume. Get some new skills. Network. Reach out. This is difficult. I was crushed when it happened to me and then my life got so much better.

Go work somewhere where you don't feel like you're going to get fired every day.
