Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Sub Plan Meeting Going on

I am on the 1st Sub Plan Review meeting. People are mad that they have to apply for unemployment. They are upset that they believe they were getting Severance Pay only to realize that it’s only supplement pay.

So sorry you're all going through this. There is light on the other side. My RIF a few years ago was straight severance. Unemployment or supplemental was not even discussed. It was after I left that a friend said I should apply for unemployment - and I got it, on top of my severance, plus PTO payout due to my state's laws. My goal was to land a new job ASAP and I would have a new salary + severance. That didn't happen as planned but was fortunate enough to land a new job just as severance was ending. Get to work on your next move and forget the past. Don't let it keep you up at night as it did me because it's a waste of time. There's a special place in he-l for people that earn millions year after year after year and make billions in profit only to remove dedicated employees to keep the numbers strong. I understand business and layoffs will happen - but they don't need to happen to a mega-rich cash cow like this place.

For any associates that were riffed in this last round and attended a RIF with Supplemental pay meeting, were you able to get a straight answer from HR regarding what happens if you find another job external to Anthem halfway through the supplemental payout timeframe? The layoff policy used to state we would get a 50 percent payout of the remaining supplemental pay, but I am not finding that information in the latest rif information that is posted.

This is so wrong. The company is pawning off part of the Severance benefit they promised to taxpayers. How is this even legal? I am going to talk to my state rep to sponsor a bill to make this practice illegal. It screws taxpayers and It screws those getting laid off. As an employee who survived every layoff in my 38+ Years there, I always felt better knowing they had a good financial buffer until they found a new job (severance and then unemployment if they didn’t find a job) or they had a financial buffer if they decided to start a business. None of that is possible with the SUP package. Lawmakers need to change this. Call yours on Monday. I am calling mine.

They have instructions on how you report the income to the state unemployment office so it’s not counted.

What if your state unemployment subtracts the money Elevance pays from what they will pay you?

What if you are in H1B, are you elligible for UE benefit?

Do you really get to keep 50% of the remaining pay as lump sum if hired elsewhere? EX: if you get 10 weeks SUB and worked until the last day, then apply for unemployment but you happen to get hired on the first week externally. Can we still get like 4-5 weeks of pay in lump sum? I'm trying to make sense of it. Have not had the packet review meeting yet.

Yes, it's not pure severance, it's a supplement to unemployment. So my understanding is that when UI stops, so does severance.

I was on it too, what a mess that was. So sorry for everyone affected, my intentional negative comments in the chat were overlooked many times for good reason I’m sure

This scenario happened to me last year. If your state unemployment is for a smaller timeframe than your supplemental unemployment pay (SUP), Elevance will pay the full SUP payment for the extra weeks. For example, if your unemployment is 12 weeks for $350/week and you get 26 weeks SUP at say a $1000/week, then for the first 12 weeks you'll get paid $1000 - $350 so the Elevance payment would be $650/week. For the remain 14 weeks, you the full $1000/ week from Elevance. Those are weekly examples and Elevance pays on a bi-weekly paycheck basis.

If state unemployment only lasts 3 months but I qualify for 5 months of supplemental pay, if I can't find another job in 3 months, does the company pay the full salary under supplemental for months 4 and 5?

This is the same thing they for the 2020 RIF I was in. You have to apply for unemployment each week and apply for jobs. Anthem will pay the difference in unemployment to equal your pay. Long gone is a true severance package.

I’m on same call. HR side stepping questions and unresolved questions left to be answered. To the lady in deep meditation and prayer… sending you all the good vibes, sage, and healing crystals etc! You brought a smile to my face and brought the human element to the call.

I'm sorry to hear that. So we would have to apply for UE and this company would make up the difference to full salary? Does that last the entire time months that UE is available?
