How are RIF candidates selected?

Does IT track your activity, or watch your productivity? How do they make the selection of who to RIF or keep? Is it possible this is an opportunity for leadership to get rid of seasoned employees that they are not happy with?

Did they say what that criteria was?

Spoke to a Staff VP today that told me that there was a criteria for RIFs given from the top. Whichever associates met that criteria were RIF’d and yes, after 20+ years, I was one of them.

WorkIQ is the tracking software and it’s probably on every employee’s computer that works from home or is on a hybrid WFH model. They told us it was to “help” us do our jobs…
Seriously how d-mb do they think we are.

Based on my experience when I was close to the process during big RIFs:

Low performers (2 ratings in most recent and/or prior reviews), salary, tenure/age (though they'll never admit this). After that it can come down to personality, team engagement, if the current or future workload doesn't justify their existence (though they never seem to realize what the actual workload is), etc.

As someone else mentioned, these aren't about pure headcount reduction - it's about cost reduction. You can have low performers on your team whom no one likes and who are pushing 65 and who don't have enough to do, but if their salaries don't get leadership to the right number, the list gets sent back for more names to be added. This is why these often roll up good talent and beloved associates.

Again just my experience in the past -- I wasn't close to this RIF.

Everything you do is accessible. Depends on your quality of work & the level of micromanagement your boss appreciates. Look for something called "WorkIQ" on your system, then you're definitely getting tracked. My new role uses it, my old org should be, LOL!

Based off a combination of salary, location and retaliation.

Often it comes down to meeting a dollar amount verses a headcount

In some are areas, it’s based on performance, in some on tenure, in some just on manager discretion. There was not a consistent approach. However, from what I know, for lower level employees, pay rate was not considered.

IT, and subsequently management, IS definitely tracking your activity, at least when it comes to computer usage. To my knowledge, they are NOT using a keylogger, but they ARE using Microsoft TEAMS to tell them when you are typing or clicking something. There is a component of this product that runs in the background. If you stop clicking or typing anything for more than 30 seconds, an entry will be written to the log file every 30 seconds until you begin typing or clicking again. This is how they track your activity. What they can't seem to grasp is that there are other ways to work besides mindlessly pounding away on your computer. They'll never get it. They're mo--ns.

When asked why we were chosen the canned response was "it not about your performance, it's purely a business decision". If you are next, ask them "how" the decision was made. Maybe you will get an answer. No one will ever know "why" they were chosen.
