I got Riffed on 9/21 with 30 day notice. Will get severance payment for a couple of weeks. If I got a new job during severance period how is the unpaid severance payment handled?

There is a Sub Pay Plan document (14 pages) on Pulse. Should come up when you search on Pulse. It outlines everything you need to know about what used to be called severance (Now called Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (SUB) pay).
You have to fill UI to even get the severance due to the supplemental benefit severance program. Anthem does not do lump sum severance pay out (thanks to this board for confirming that)
@1xb
Isn’t applying for unemployment a requirement for most when they offer severance? Why would they deny it? I’ve seen others mention the same thing you did and I’m floored.
Thanks.
Severance is not available as a lump sum.
When I was RIFd in 2021 o got severance and because the position was eliminated I applied and got unemployment. Anthem fought the unemployment and because the position was emanated and there was no “cause” - unemployment t was approved. My state also paid out PTO. I landed a job within my severance and it was not reduced. Nowhere in my paperwork did it say I’d lose severance if I got a job. I would have preferred to be hired right away to double dip but thankful it worked out.
Has anyone been able to negotiate severance as a lump sum? Or delay filing for unemployment so you can get more weeks? I doubt I’d be able to get something before Jan1 just how budgeting works… my friend was on pto all of last week - would they track them down or just wait until tomorrow? I doubt they are on this site….
Used to get severance independent of unemployment. Now companies pay the difference and give half if you find a job.
Correlation to this change and mass layoffs 😉. Government is making it easy for companies to exert their will on employers.
One more clarification on that. If you are rehired in the company the severance just ends. The 50% is when you are hired externally. Keep in mind every state has its own rules about job offers and whether you accept or decline them. Further if you get hired externally they will ask you to provide information where your new job is. Careful for all with non competes. That’s how they come after you.
If you get a job before the severance runs out you get 50% of the remaining portion. It’s in the severance package.
Clarification… some people have to apply for unemployment benefits to get their severance (supplemental income) and sole don’t. I think it depends on age, state and job level.
If you get an internal job your severance ends.
If you get an external job and did NOT have to apply for unemployment to get your severance … it’s yours.
What you may get from your state for unemployment should have nothing to do with your package and vice versa. The only play with unemployment is that you are not earning a wage for "work" completed. You could get 1 Million package, means nothing to state its not earned wage and would still qualify for unemployment benefits.
Is severance a lump sum payment? Can you request it be?
The information is available within Anthem’s website. Unless your state has different requirements, once you get a job, the severance payments end. Regardless of internal or external from my review of the policy. You must apply for unemployment, and then Anthem will pay the difference between unemployment and severance. Once you get a job, you will not receive severance from my understanding.
Yes
If I get a job externally before the severance period is over will Anthem pay for the rest of the period?
I’m so sorry. It will depend on if you have landed a new role internally or externally. Outside of Elevance no impact to your severance. Internal roles will be outlined in the separation documents.
