Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Laid off people skew older

Am I wrong? It seems so based on those who were laid off among the people I know, but is this true company-wide?

When they do RIFs, they target people that are over the mid-range (MRP) for their position. It is nearly impossible to bring people in above MRP (without an equity review by executive leadership), but people that were hired close to MRP (and have been there for a few years), or those that have been there a very long time, are likely over MRP so they are targeted first.

They definitely know what they're doing. In a RIF last fall of 15 people, most fell into one of the following categories:

Ethnic minorities, over 50, disabled, or a combo of the three.

I personally know two of them who pursued legal action, but what protected the company is that young/white/under 35s were part of it, and they couldn't find attorneys to take their cases. One of them, there was documented history of institutional racism she'd endured, and every attorney she approached told her because other women of color were riffed, it would be impossible to prove her race was a factor. Attorney even agreed she was targeted, but knew they couldn't win.

Another was approaching retirement with amazing reviews, including by her manager, but also going back ten years. Manager had previously made it clear she wanted someone "young and hungry" and my friend had proof of it. But, because other people in her age range and younger were rolled up in the rif, she got the same result from her consults.

Anthem attorneys know exactly what they're doing.

I was laid off several year ago as part of a restructure. There were 7 of us. All were female, over 40 and making over $70k. But they gave us a fantastic severance and we had to sign an agreement that if we sued them, we would have to pay back the severance. The other 6 didn't want to lose their severance.

Elevance knows what they're doing when it comes to these Lay offs Rifs. They have big lawyers. I can bet you the folks that were impacted has to sign a
NDR ( non disclosure request) They keep the numbers low enough where they don't have to report it. They vary in age ranges and demographic to avoid age and demographic discrimination. Also keep in mind also people moving back to the office or not is also a factor..

over 50 and got the boot, 8 yr tenure, but was def low man on the totem pole (meaning not busy and lower amount of experience on team) Others that remained are younger, however they did have more exposure (favortism) and prior medicare experience.

Quite a few of the people I know who were laid off are in their 20s.

There was a small round of layoffs in marketing a few months back. I personally knew 3 people. All were 50+.

This is a massive company with huge resources and a competent in house legal team. They know what they’re doing and are prepared for someone to try to sue them. I’m sure it’s happened many times and they have a well worn path to dealing with it.

Could it be so that they can record an early retirement instead of a RIF and their numbers will look good for their best places to work rating?
