Does being put on a CAP usually result in termination? My manager said I was in the initial stages but it doesn’t feel like it. I was given an end date for the plan and my manager basically said “if we make it that far”

i was on a cap a long time ago and got off it and then switched jobs internally 2 times.
Manager here - cap doesn’t always lead to termination. If whatever you have been put on cap for doesn’t improve, then yes termination will happen. There are multiple levels of CAP and we have to submit a lot of documentation for each at level. Typically CAP is reviewed every 30/60/90 days. If improved, you will be removed from CAP and the case will be closed. However, to fire someone over CAP, this is not an easy thing to do. It can take months/year depending on the situation.
Many High profile leaders in and outside this organization cautions employees; once a CAP is initiated you need to start looking. Even if a CAP does not end in termination, think about the circumstances that triggered your manager in initiating it. Those core reasons will exist in their mind no matter your reality. You will never progress to be a top performer in their eyes and you will never get a 5 on your reviews. And once it’s on your HR record, internal managers have access to it too. If you could never redeem yourself in their eyes, it would feel like a dead end.
CAP or no CAP- it does not matter when they are setting the stage to cut long tenure, high/low performance. Especially if your boss is a puppet to protect their own job. It absolutely has nothing to do with logic or ethical practices.
This org has been in M&A for a long time they know what they can get away with!!!
Sounds like they want you out.
A CAP is a "Corrective Action Plan" thats meant to help you improve in the areas you need to.
If thats not in place, then you've been setup to failure and likely to be let go at the cap expiry.
