Thread regarding Suncor Energy Inc. layoffs

Anyone did severance review with a lawyer? Who did you use? Was it worth it? How much does the review cost?

What about wrongful dismissal, if they demote or terminate someone performing well in role, only to offer the materially same role to another person that no longer had a position?

I had a lawyer review. It appeared to be a fair offer.
I asked for clarification on a few points and had zero assistance. I decided mentally the best was to sign and move on.

Do your due diligence people with obtaining an employment lawyer.
There are tons of firms out there. The one mentioned in this thread has some bad reviews. Do your homework people!

Has anyone seen an employment lawyer that actually said they had a case worth fighting? Is anyone pursuing a claim?

It’s more so a certain # of months to receive a monthly payment. Legally it’s one month salary for 2 years of service. Only, it was disappointing because no other compensation was factored in for bonuses/benefits, this could have been negotiated if I wanted to drag this out… I expected better when I imagined this scenario. However, I’m just happy to get out because there is no future if I’d have been stuck in the grind, it would have gotten worse and there was no chance I’d have ever quit. I’m still in shock they actually agreed to let me go. I’m thrilled!

Out of curiousity, what was everyone’s severance offer?

On the upside, back pay isn’t really relevant because severance is a different beast… severance is about the number of payments. So, they’ll get everything stated on the contract, a payment for a certain # of months as long as they signed in time. The best option is if you can find a friend or family member who’s a lawyer and can give you their honest opinion. My severance was fair, but barely. If I had gone to a lawyer it would been pointless

My friend went to a lawyer and it was pretty bad. She paid $900. He went over the contract and sent Suncor a proposal. Suncor denied everything. He sent another proposal, they denied that as well. This entire thing lasted over 3 months and she had 0 money coming in during that period. She ended up just signing a day or so ago and is unsure if she will get backpay. With the volume of layoffs, I would not waste my time with a lawyer. She was with the company for 13 years.
