Do I need to tell them if I start new job?

I got impacted last week, and my separation date is Nov 3rd. Now I got a new job offer and planning to start in two weeks. Do I need to tell T-Mobile that I am starting a new job? Does it impact continuous pay and severance. Severance package is generous, I do not want to loose it. And on the other hand I do not want risk the job offer by delaying start date.

This is what I would do:

Do not tell TMO anything.
Keep you mouth shut.
Start your new job.
Do not update Linkedin or any other social media.
Get on with your life.

Nope, don't tell them anything. Once they cut you lose, that is then end of any kind of interaction.

Q. If I receive an external offer prior to my separation date, will I still receive my severance?
A. If you take employment outside of T-Mobile prior to your given exit date, please notify your HR Partner as soon as possible. You will be eligible receive the payments outlined in your severance agreement regardless of finding a role outside of T-Mobile during your Transition Leave period.

I've been double dipping for over ten years now, and I've received numerous severances. I've been laid off five or six times.

The trick to keeping your severance is just KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT

In particular, my LinkedIn is always at least a year out of date

Won't get into how, but I promise you that I am very knowledgeable on these matters. Your severance is yours to keep even if you are fortunate to immediately get hired on at a different company. Start your job, move on with your life. (And the idea that a payroll company is tracking you and will report it back to T-Mobile is just silly, good grief)

They amended the severance FAQs on 9/8 saying you can get an external role and not have your severance affected. I was let go on 8/30 and I checked my docs last week and the updated 9/8 doc was attached.

Anyone know if benefits stick if employed elsewhere within those 60 days? Looking at a few very early start ups (limited to no healthcare Benny’s) and haven’t seen it noted anywhere in documentation.

There is no law requiring you to tell them and there is no law against having two jobs. They play ion your fear while they serve on multiple boards. They only caveat is if you work for a competitor.

Delaying the start date is not possible, as it needs to be delayed by almost two months. They said I should start ASAP. So I asked for two weeks.

Laid off in the big Aug 2022 layoffs. If you start another job during these 2 months, you will lose the severance pkg and whatever you have remaining pay of the 2 months. These 2 months, you are still considered an employee. You start another job, that is considered that you have 'left the company'. This is a dirty little secret they neglect to tell you because they hope you get another job & they don't have to payout the severance pkg.

Another thing, they can call you back to work during these 2 months

I believe they have a way to track via payroll providers and then deduct your severance pay. I suggest you postpone your joining date and enjoy a vacation while you have your next job welcoming .

I read my severance agreement so many times, but nothing is mentioned about it. It only appears once in FAQ. It uses the term exit date, which is never mentioned before. Looks like need to consult with employment attorney, just to be safe.

Why wouldn't you tell the new employer that you can't start until 11/10 (7 days after your separation date). Then you're clean. Either that or tell the new employer of your potential loss of severance income to start with them.

If you tell T-Mobile that you start the job before separation date, you will lose your severance. It will cause you to leave voluntarily. You can either say nothing and hope there is no problems. You can also move out the start date after separation date. I started my new job and didn’t say anything. Do not put the job in LinkedIn until after your separation date. Don’t say anything to anyone. Not even coworkers. Make your decision and keep it yourself.

It will move your end date up from 11/3 which means you won't get the full 60+ days of free pay by staying on payroll and it will also change how much of your bonus you get. It's in the FAQ section of your severance document towards the end of the document. I wouldn't tell anyone.
