Thread regarding Amazon.com layoffs

I can't take it anymore. Amazon is ruining my family life

To join Amazon, I left a really good job that begged me to stay, even offering an instant promotion and significant raise to keep me. I left because the work/product at Amazon seemed exciting and innovative, the pay was great, and most importantly, they PROMISED me that the company was committed to remaining remote and that my job would always be virtual. I could not have possibly articulated more clearly to them that I am a family person and that being available in mornings and evenings to see my children is of the utmost importance to me. They confidently old me it would never be a problem.

Even when the RTO news leaked at Amazon, my leaders continued to tell me I had nothing to worry about. They promised my role was virtual and that they would accommodate me however they could. Lie by lie, that illusion has dissolved, and now I am facing the option to travel an insane number of hours every week just to make it to an office where none of my team is, or lose my job. I have a family and a newborn - my entire life is here. They couldn't care less.

And it all comes with no actual benefit to my work - RTO will actually greatly hinder my ability to continue doing great work.

I love my job, and I love my teammates. But I can't let a job destroy my family life - and my trust in Amazon at this point has completely evaporated. There is zero integrity among senior leadership. When I joined a couple years ago, I really planned to stay here for a long time. It's really sad that it has come to this.

@Jobs+1o8vDvNX Is exactly right. Be ready, 3 days is just the starting point. It’ll most likely get up to at least 4 per week as the industry and corporate norm.

A promise is not a signed contract. Managers come and go, the situation changes. You should know that if you have any work experience. No need to complain if you don’t have a remote contract. It was your decision with all potential risks.
I'm also not thrilled that I have to be in the office 3 days a week, but I don't think they're asking us for something crazy - most companies in the world functioned that way before. Covid has shown that this mode is not necessarily the only option. I personally think that 2 days a week are more than enough - coordination with the team, planning, quick information, and the rest work from home for better concentration (if the working environment at home allows it. I know cases where parents of young children come to the office because the children are too much for them disturb at home). Spending time with colleagues also enables the creation of excellent connections. My best time at Amazon was before covid - the team was really close and we had a lot of fun working and delivered great. Therefore, you either adapt to the requirements by moving or look for a new job.

It’s a toxic place! Got let go in July for non compliance with RTO, but they paid me to go. Good deal! I’m so relieved!

Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Meta implemented similar RTO scheme. It is not just Amazon. Rent an apartment closer to work, man.

I'm so sorry. Unfortunately, I can relate to you, and I'm sure many others can too. Amazon is disgusting, and they are pushing this RTO so adamantly, knowing it will result in the destruction of many families and work-life balance, in addition to causing people to want to leave. It's best just to find another job that does offer remote work. That's what I plan to do.
