To join Amazon, I left a really good job that begged me to stay, even offering an instant promotion and significant raise to keep me. I left because the work/product at Amazon seemed exciting and innovative, the pay was great, and most importantly, they PROMISED me that the company was committed to remaining remote and that my job would always be virtual. I could not have possibly articulated more clearly to them that I am a family person and that being available in mornings and evenings to see my children is of the utmost importance to me. They confidently old me it would never be a problem.
Even when the RTO news leaked at Amazon, my leaders continued to tell me I had nothing to worry about. They promised my role was virtual and that they would accommodate me however they could. Lie by lie, that illusion has dissolved, and now I am facing the option to travel an insane number of hours every week just to make it to an office where none of my team is, or lose my job. I have a family and a newborn - my entire life is here. They couldn't care less.
And it all comes with no actual benefit to my work - RTO will actually greatly hinder my ability to continue doing great work.
I love my job, and I love my teammates. But I can't let a job destroy my family life - and my trust in Amazon at this point has completely evaporated. There is zero integrity among senior leadership. When I joined a couple years ago, I really planned to stay here for a long time. It's really sad that it has come to this.
