I was a new hire and I got let go even before my 1 year perf review.
How did they justify my layoff to HR ?

I can assure that long time directors are incompetent. They dont care about customers. I will celebrate in one year when no customer is buying their new products and all these guys are sitting at home.
OP, most likely it was Last IN First OUT. Unless you had poor performers on your team this was the easiest decision for your manager. He wasn't asked he was told to cut one.
It is easy to trap and backstab and get someone laid off. When it comes to deliverables how will they fake it ? Everyone is held accountable in life for their actions. If they think they can ruin other's lives now with lies, they will reap what they sow.
You were hired so that they could fire you instead of longer term buttsmooch lackeys.
They deliberately make it impossible to understand how these decisions are made so that they can avoid lawsuits.
I’m sorry for what’s happened to you. It’s unlikely you’ll ever really receive a justifiable reason for why you were chosen. Could be anything and all kinds of context that informs it. Was your whole team or org whacked? Did some VP make a unfair snap judgment about you in a 30 second interaction in a meeting? Did your boss play the politics poorly? Were you paid too much relative to your team? Was there a performance metric you were held to that you didn’t even know about that’s not actually indicative of your everyday work? Were you a poor performer? There’s just no way to fully know. Best to just focus on your future.
Hopefully they let the manager who hired you go too.
