Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

8/11/2023

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know the total amount of people impacted by the layoffs yesterday? Leadership is not giving a clear answer. I am pretty new to the company so I have not seen this before.

Companies like this needs to be unionized to help protect the rights of workers. They are a modern day sweat shop and do whatever they want because they can.

Has anyone been successful renegotiating their severance package with legal help?

What position did you have that was reinstated on 8/8/2023 ?

That is literally two days before your official expired day

The round of layoffs on 8/10 was at least a second round. I was laid off on 7/26 with 8/10 set to be my last day. As with the 8/10 layoffs, the impact was widespread both across the company, the pay scale, and range of experience. I have 7+ years experience, as do many of my impacted colleagues.

What makes my experience unusual is that the (lay-off) decision was reversed on 8/8, when I was offered reinstatement, an offer which I gratefully accepted. The decision reversal was made in response to advocacy from local executive and state regulator staff that I work with on a daily basis. I don’t know the content of that input, only that it made a strong business case for restoration of my role in all locations where it had been eliminated. It also suggests that at least some of the layoff decisions were made without full awareness of the key role that some of the targeted positions play.

My heart goes out to all my passionate, dedicated colleagues who were not as lucky as I and who are now looking for new job opportunities.

Hi, this is Richard (the journalist), and that's fine if people would rather email me at work. Here's where I can be reached: rbedard@money-media.com (one of our publications covers the healthcare industry). Again, all communication will be treated as anonymous unless you give me permission to use your name. Thanks!

Richard,
I know of at least 6 people, including myself, that were laid off. In speaking with a friend in abother department, there were layoffs there too. These people were hard workers as well, many had been with the company for 7+ years. I immediately went here and saw the postings. You can also see the spike in job/salary/benefit reviews on Glassdoor. Many UHG employees on LinkedIn are getting recommendations from colleagues and changing to OpenForWork.

While 30k does seem like a massive number of people... I think there might be some truth to it. The company is massive, global, and compartmentalized. It's easy to hide it.

Dear Richard. If you are truly a journalist why not provide your work email. If any wanted to contact you they could create and use a dummy email.

I am a journalist trying to get more information about these layoffs. Anyone who wants to reach out to me (guaranteed anonymity unless you're willing to use your name), I'll give you a personal email address where I can be reached: rb409699@yahoo.com (you can email me using a nonwork account). I'm trying to both get a sense of the scope of these layoffs and see if anyone would be willing to talk about being personally affected. My name is Richard. Thanks!

The emails went out a little before 8am yesterday morning to VPs, Directors all the way down to Supervisors. With a list of people under them that had to be laid off and it had to be done by noon yesterday. The 30k people were not strictly with UHG but also included their subsidies.
The layoffs went from VPs down to the hourly employees. No one was exempt. I'm surprised HR was able to keep this quiet for this long. Think the only reason it was. Was due to them including the Executives in the layoffs. Usually they are exempt from them or are given a heads up weeks ahead of time to secure a new job somewhere else.

Hmm let’s see, 30,000 ppl approximately. Even if you figure it costs $250,000 per person to keep them employed it doesn’t even come close to what BT and Sir Galahad cleared last year. Food for thought.

UHG laid off approximately 10% of its entire workforce from the Top Down. So roughly 30k people.
