My former manager with 20+ years with the company just got RIFed. Also a former team mate.

I got got a few years ago along with my entire dept and got headhunted back in by another vertical, which as probably not smart.

At risk of appearing overly-positive, I do want to piggyback on It'sAnewDay's comments, the skill sets that most Optum employees have to develop in the course of their jobs are MAJORLY in demand.

In sales or customer outreach? Do you realize that most of the domestic workforce much under 40 have exactly zero aptitude for working over the phone, let alone in person? If you are even half way decent at making direct contact with customers or potential customers, you can basically write your own ticket if you are willing to do some work to gain knowledge of a new product.

Automation or training? Have you seen the state of end user process automation for repetitive tasks in the providers we work with? And guess what: all of those providers, clinics and labs are going to be looking for ways to cut costs too.

Claims processing or similar? I can guarantee you have detailed personal knowledge of which providers have SEVERE deficits in their billing/office staff. Everyplace is hiring remote, and there's your interview/cover letter pitch, "I believe there are significant opportunities to increase your first submission accuracy and paid resolution %."

And I haven't even talked about consulting, SaaS, etc.

You have major time in a Fortune 10 org, you don't need to appeal to authority, you are the authority.

It's happening. Guaranteed. Managers with inpacted staff were invited to attend whichever of the four training (how to conduct a layoff) sessions they wanted (or attend multiples). Previous comments have pointed out that some of those trainings had hundreds of people leaders in attendance, so it's safe to assume this is a larger scale event than other recent ones.

"I've heard impact will be across the board, a lot based on "optimizing" the org in reaction to "redundancies" created by M&A activity. That said, naive to think that management isn't taking advantage of the situation to "prune" their orgs as well."

Resharing because its important: "I know it makes some people feel better to villainize, but the majority of managers who have to let folks go today are pretty gutted by the whole experience. This doesn't even factor in the fact that they are fully aware that they themselves may be in the "next wave"."

Speculation isn't healthy, so I'll stop there. I do, however, want to encourage anyone impacted (myself included), to keep your shoulders back and your chin up. Getting let go isn't the end. It's the start of a fresh, exciting new chapter where Anything is possible. It may not be easy, but it's something you can and will get through. You got this job and you'll get the next one. Don't burn bridges on your way out. As best you can, focus on being grateful for the experience vs focusing on the negative feelings of that experience ending. Positivity is KEY. You've got this! We've got this! One week -> one day -> one hour -> one step at a time. Break down "what's next" into steps and focus on one step at a time. Make it manageable. Be kind to yourself. Stay humble. Stay positive. Stay grateful. Stay focused.

As with all things in life, "This too shall pass." ✌️🫶🤝

The convos are happening now. It's wide spread and crosses many roles and groups so hard to summarize. I'm sure we will be getting details from co-workers of those affected and even some who have been affected. Those folks can provide details if they choose.

Good luck everyone.

Interesting folks claiming their teams are already getting decimated by layoffs yet not even a team name/title? Can we at least include this?

To those who say it’s already happening what departments. At least name the department/position grade/type.

If you don’t believe it’s happening, believe it. We got hit with a bunch just now and it’s not even 9am. This day is going to be brutal. And the way they’ve handled this, they should be disgusted with themselves. So if you don’t think it’s happening, it’s already begun.

Word of layoffs today is probably just BS trolling.

It’s absolutely not trolling. Managers with employees impacted were sent an email early this week and end of last week only saying that someone on their team will be let go but did not include any names. Only advising us that we will be provided specifics Thursday. Managers are somewhat aware of the names because SVP asked us for names a month ago. Discussions were in broad terms such as…..if you had to put forth a name….
