I do what I love, I keep expanding my knowledge and expertise, and I have enjoyed a good career trajectory. I know this is not a popular thing to say or admit, but I think this is one of the better places to work and I would be devastated if I was laid off. I hope those who keep saying they can't wait to get out are the ones who get their wish.

I was in a similar situation at Symantec...I loved the tech and the team. Waiting for the transaction was trying, as so many have noted here, but I'm glad I stayed. I hope the wait pays off for you as well.
I've been in this industry long enough (30 years, several M&A's and layoffs/re-orgs) to realize that a lot of what former Microsoft VP of HR Chris Williams gives as career advice for employees today is spot on. Don't get emotionally attached to your job or your employer - the feeling is not mutual. At the end of the day, it's all about money:
- Never expect loyalty from the company and never offer loyalty to it, either.
- Don't expect the company to reward your seniority in your paycheck.
- Don't expect it to promote you based simply on your longevity.
- Don't expect your company to be sympathetic to your yearslong tenure when the layoffs are looming.
Do you work on a product that will survive the Hock cuts? That is all that matters for you employment. And you like the “VMware culture” - well that will be toast. Enjoy living with you head in the sand, get ready for disruption.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but BC will not care who likes or dislikes VMW. The primary persons who will get their wish will be Michael Dell and the clueless VMW board of directors. Everyone else, not so much. You could be devastated, regardless.
