Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

A couple things...

Getting RIF's is the first day of the rest of your life. A couple things...

Saw a great post somewhere (maybe here) about setting expectations. You may not get offers at or above what you're making now. But this person's advice was to consider your severance as a buffer to bring you up to where you are now.

Recruiters and employers understand that people get laid off. What's harder is staying in the same position for years without any pay increases or promotions. In some states they can't ask you about your salary, but they can ask you about staying in the same role for years. So be prepared to answer that.

From personal experience, I'd take at most 4-6 weeks off before getting back into the job hunt. Longer than that and you're not as attractive to recruiters and employers.

One thing that saddened me was that I only heard from a few of my colleagues after I was RIFd. I was astonished at how most pretty much ghosted me. So don't be surprised if you don't receive condolences and well wishes from your colleagues and work friends.

Bumping for good info from @1emk+1mUEQZAq.

At Oracle and another tech company, even after I stuck up for people and left, ghosted me. I came to the reality that for some, this is all they have coming in and for many, they have zero skills and dont feel they need to risk it being friends or being loyal to anyone. I would say I consider about 5 or people "colleagues". Granted, a lot burned themselves being just flat out two faced liars. Ironically people in their 50s-70s. I never got that. I get that women can be catty, but seeing men be that way, I was like wow dude.

Idk about this... this tech market is brutal right now and doesn't look to be letting up for the next 6-12 months.

In my lifetime, I've seen too many mid-career tech professionals stall out in promos and plateau as a highly-paid and specialized IC, then get RIFd, then take a step down at a lesser company, have that not work out, then go to another lesser company, have that not work out etc etc until the death spiral lands them as a lifetime "consultant" out of work in their mid-50s. So... be very, very careful about where you take a step down because more than likely you won't be able to step back up again.

Also - don't work at Oracle!

Don't totally trust anyone in the workplace. I know it sounds cold, but you have to protect yourself and realize that people are probably scared and protecting themselves as well. Scared people do things. Or don 't do things.

A lot of friends are fair-weather friends, particularly in silly valley.

Amen to that! It is like you have leprosy, or they would also be riffed if they were seen to associate with you!
