Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Ashamed to have Dell on my resume

I devoted myself to looking for new opportunities because I don't see that anything will be better here. At the same time, I don't think I've ever been more ashamed of having Dell on my resume. I'm probably not the only one? I don't know how recruiters look at someone's long experience here, but I don't believe they are really impressed when they see Dell on their resume.

@mns+1nqltDMe you’ve clearly never purchased an Apple computer… go buy a gaming computer from Apple and try to sell me it’s cheaper than Dell. You’re insane.

Firstly, if you truly, deeply are ashamed to have Dell on your resume, thats your own reasoning. But it's not the view of the public or the recruiters.

Secondly, if you arent really ashamed but are just drama fishing. Snore.

Dell is a well known household name. Your resume looks better for it. Unless you were punted for doing something bad or you didnt hit your numbers. Even then, no one cares, they just see the company name and recognise it and you move up the pile.

How many years at dell? If under 4-5 then okay.

But more than that it starts looking sad

I think you are being a little dramatic and self aggrandizing. Sure--there is plenty to criticize about Dell, but it is still a major IT vendor. If you were in a decent role here, that will be great experience. I would define a decent role as being involved with modern technology and/or being in a role that allowed you to grow your soft skills (sales, leadership, etc). Interviewing is all about story telling. Have a couple of good stories queued up to talk about how you contributed, made a difference, or changed how something was done. That is why I think it's important to start searching for a new job before you disengage or lose your current one. You will have more stories to share and the memories will be fresher.

If you don't have any decent stories, you need to ask yourself why. The answer isn't because Dell sucks. I've been in sh---y roles in sh---y companies before and sought out interesting projects to engage in. It made all the difference.

I was able to get a new job, I believe primarily because I got they had all Dell gear and I was working at Dell

Dell makes systems same price as Mac with less performance, battery life, build quality, thermal management and support.

Dell makes instant e-waste.

Who consciously goes to the computer market and says, I’ll buy a Dell when there is a Mac option equivalently priced and the PC competition is 1/2 the cost of a Dell. I guess same type of people who buy a Chrysler over a Toyota.
