I was laid off 2 years ago from Oracle, Not because i was a bad performer, i was in fact one of the top 25% in terms of performance. I was however lied to and blinded by my manager , who kept repeating to me how valuable i am to his team in each 1:1 . Not even once my work was complained about. I created trainings for newer members and kept helping them in every scrum meetings.
On a Tuesday morning my manager called me on my personal cell phone and in a cold voice , read the lay off script to me . I waited for the script to finish and said ‘Thank you ……. , you have been great ‘ .
Looking back today that layoff was the best thing that happened to my career yet . I now work at a place where the work culture is much better , pay is better and work-life balance is really good.
Had it not been for the layoff , i would have been sitting at the same place where everything is taken for granted , working long hours .
One thing I learned from this whole episode is NEVER trust your manager , EVER. They can backstab you with a smile on their face .
