Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Is the mgr well that dry?

Our last two coaches have been internal promotions and the store my uncle is in last 3 coaches were internal promotions.

They use to never promote a internal hourly to salary and let them stay in the store. Is a new ideology or is it getting that hard to find salary candidates? If that is the case, if this a bi product of GWP restructure or Pandemic related . I would lean more towards GWP as it has at least for me after 30 years have made the workplace feel and look worse than it has ever been.

No certain markets aren't allowed to hire externals. They apply and interview but they can't hire externally if the market has too many coach trainees. There's plenty if external applicants.

One thing for sure, once more automation gets put in place, the need for people in the stores, distribution centers and even transportation will reduce.

As soon as the eStore concept is rolled out and becomes accepted, there will be no need to even go into the stores. You’ll place your order online, a robot will pick your items and you’ll either go pick them up or they will be delivered.

And you can thank the 20-39 year olds for that. They overwhelmingly prefer to shop on their phones and not in a store.

If you think I’m kidding, just look at the success of online grocery. We’ve already seen that expand to the entire store, even filling orders from other stores in the area.

There’s an obvious problem with internal hiring. Since there’s no hiring standards for hourly associates, we have people on board that do not speak English, no high school diploma, can not spell, have no work ethic, been arrested, been fired from every other job they’ve ever had, etc etc etc.

So, how can they hire from internal sources when those sources are literally at the rock bottom of the hiring pool?

It’s not a problem, though. Once AI, robotics and automation gets implemented more widely, we’ll see “human” staffing needs drop off and we’ll be able to start over, keep the best associates and get rid of the rest. That day is coming.

The buddy buddy system is safer to promote. Walmart's finest will do anything to not promote someone smarter than them. There was a time that a store manager had to know every department. Thats gone , rare to put the right person in the right position. A buddy will do . There is no policy of walmart compared to what a buddy will do for a buddy.

There is nobody that wants to work at walmart, walmart is a stepping stone for people. They don’t reward long term employees, use Walmart, get your education and find a better job. Don’t get stuck where your dependent on the company.

Better to hire internally, they already know the business. Plus finally hard working employees are actually being rewarded rather than brining in external manager who has no clue about the business and employees becoming resentful, leaving, and all other hard working employees have to pick up the extra responsibilities with no raise or rewards.
