Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Feels like they are trying to close the Longmont Site

80% of the cubes are empty
Fresh green markers on all the cubes of those who were RIFed
No more coffee stations
Seems like all Ambassadors were impacted
Fitness center is unstaffed and
No more fitness classes
Cold takeaway and limited hours for the cafe.

I was required to be in Longmont/told I had to relocate for my role, but now they can’t even keep up with salaries for the area and the it seems like the building is closing.

@1ody - What is the third company? PrairieTek? Quantum?

It will be back to the old maxtor building that has been reconfigured for a few smaller companies. Micron is moving in there for more space. Seagate will move in for less space. Probably most of seagate’s space will be for server development and not HDD. For some people it will be the 3rd time in the building for 3 different companies.

@1ugt Another thing you're missing is that wafer fabs are expensive, which doesn't work well with Seagate's current finances. A second issue is that manufacturing heads is very complicated and would probably take several years to become proficient at: again, the rapidly shrinking market for HDD, and the need to improve yields on HAMR heads doesn't work in Seagate's favor for moving head manufacture to Thailand.

@1ugt - What you are missing is the non-stop attrition which occurs in Thailand Seagate. Factory engineers can and will move to fresh employment down the street just to get a raise. Everyone knows the entry level wages are the worst and new hires are only there to achieve 2 yrs employment so they can easily get hired elsewhere. Maybe it won't matter to mgmt.

How fast can Seagate build a wafer FAB in Thailand? Then executives can close Ireland and NRM as well. Thailand can be wafer-to-drive site. If Seagate has no USA presence, then Seagate can sell to Huawei and other Chinese vendors again with no penalty. Bonus, the executives get treated like royalty in Thailand. Thailand people are happy all the time. What am I missing?

The building is being sold for immediate cash and lease-back - well known. Moving people around within the building was announced at all hands. I don’t see the site closing anytime soon. Desperation out of HR to appear useful with useless and trite cost saving ideas doesn’t indicate anything IMO. The sweet high dollar BS jobs at Google, Twitter and Amazon are last years’ news - try that now and let us know how it goes. I’m in chill mode - “do less with less” - waiting for that severance check.

Yep. SHK survivor here. Get used to working your final years in a mortuary mate. Not all bad if you enjoy being alone in silence all day and don't really like being around people much. I can't believe the cafeteria is still open frankly. Not even worth it. I haven't eaten there in many years since I saw several employees exit the bathroom without washing hands. My best guess is NRM will the new single US design center eventually. Heads/Drive in one spot. They've cleaned a large amount of people out and are completing an expansion. The CEO came to SHK and said he regretted ever building the site to our faces. He now regrets being unable to unload and sell it so it can be closed. LCO appears to be in the same class now. Can it be more obvious what the plan is?

Shakopee has plastic over the chairs in the empty cubes. Not aware of any fitness classes in along time. Someone has been removing equipment from RIFd employee lab spots and stacking on shelves carts. It is a ghost town, most of the days. I used to share a lab spot with two others and had six engineers sitting across from me. I now have two across from me and a solo cube. Flip a coin on who’s getting closed. Most c-gaters are capable of working remote. I’d guess tco, frc, and lco close with Nrm being your new us design center. Remote employees to fill the gaps.

Shakopee has been like that for 3 years now. I’ve heard they are working hard to sell the LCO building. The building site is actually on very valuable land in a premium development area. Which makes it selling and closing it more likely.
