Thread regarding T-Mobile layoffs

How safe do you feel?

Maybe I'm too anxious because up until now my private situation has always been good so it would've been easier for me to go without a job for a while than now when it would be very difficult for me to be left without a source of income. On the other hand I notice that some others feel very comfortable and safe.

Long tenure and perks costs.You are a target.
Teams that do not rely on skeletal staff and contractor overlap to compensate.
Singular focus teams that do nut multithread.

No. While it's true that conscious and unconscious bias exist and factor into decisions, there is no strategy to rank people from high to low tenure or pay. The primary objective is to reduce costs, but they are also eliminating certain roles and reducing the number of managers at all levels in order to increase span of control per manager. Every deciding leader is different and every team is different, but generally speaking, leaders want to end up with the strongest team possible post-reduction. Also, when a leader selects an individual to lay off, if there are others in the team in the same title, they must complete an assessment which compares performance between everyone in the role. HR and legal review these assessments to identify any potential bias or discrimination risks. Lastly, let's not confuse experience with talent, effectiveness, or performance. Being around longer does not equate to being a stronger performer than others with your title with less tenure. There is a broad spectrum of performance in every age group. If you happen to be highly tenured and get cut, you are likely a lower performer. If you have low tenure and get cut, you are likely a low performer. Leaders will still be accountable and invented to deliver results post-reduction, so they aren't going to sabotage their teams by removing their best performers. Periodt.

It's definitely ageism as those with the most experience are those that are typically paid the most.

There's also the fact that the pay scale in Seattle is higher than that in Kansas City (Per NerdWallet, Cost of living in Seattle is 38% higher than in KC), which is leading to lots of Seattle and Washington folks being higher on any layoff list.

to get severance, you sign off on suing the company...when i was let go in first wave of 2020 and am over 50 they provided some letter saying they felt confident it had nothing to do with age lol and gave stats on ages of those let go

If anyone feels they've been wrongfully terminated due to age, thats ageism and illegal. You'd have the right to seek legal council against T-Mobile on the topic.

I'm just out of fu--s to give. The working environment has gotten progressively worse. The words "Best Place to Work" are not even uttered any longer. Our goal is no longer to keep customers happy but rather keep stockholders happy. If I get laid off, I'll just take my severence and move on. I doubt there is anything about the new company I would miss beyond my current teammates.

job market is fine. honestly this is mostly contained to tmobile at this point because we've failed at increasing revenue, so we must increase profit instead

upper management is all out of ideas to make money and we've milked the customers for all we can. so cost savings is next....
