Thread regarding Suncor Energy Inc. layoffs

Severance packages

I’m hearing that folks are being offered a salary continuance and that stops if you find new employment. Is there any portion of the package that’s lump sum or is it all monthly payments so long as you’re unemployed?

Has an employment lawyer weighed in on this salary continuance vs lump sum payment?

Aside from concerns about privacy (does Suncor have the right to know how much I am making in my new job with another company?), solution is to look for a job that pays up to 84% of your previous salary, or similar pay but go part-time, like 80%. That way, no claw back and get 184% of your previous pay every month, until severance run out.

Yes salary continuance and 50% if you find a job that pays 85% or greater your remaining payments are cut in half. So guess what? I ain’t looking !!!

I was part of the layoffs as a result of the move to Calgary and I can confirm that’s how then we’re structured in 2021. If you got a new job they gave you 50% of whatever was remaining in your salary continuance as a lump sum. But I did talk to several people and heard it was very unlikely they would find about a new role and then claw it back if you didn’t report it. But that’s a risk you would take.
