Unions are not the problem. See Chicago…
Private fiber providers generally do well until the maintenance costs exceed the revenues. The standard business model is to aggregate a bunch of stuff together and find a pigeon who thinks it's attractive.
That's because those 3 are held hostage by unions. Comcast is in the same business but fares better because they are not weighed down by them.
Fiber hasn't been profitable in the long run for any of those. AT&T and Verizon are public utilities, so it is just integrated into their business. Lumen has lots of red ink in their financials and their stock is around 1.60 per share. Zayo does better, but they are privately held now, so not much visibility into their performance. The operating expenses crush these businesses so that only a small net profit is generated.
Churn & Burn the Lightower Porsche club can tell you all about it.
HAHAHAHAHA! Fiber has never turned a profit. That’s why it’s never mentioned on earnings calls. Zayo, Comcast, Charter, Verizon, Frontier and Lumen all figured out how to make money from fiber but Crown can’t?
Yeah, Crown fiber is the laughing stock of telecom.
@3tud+1nTT5kPr, rapid trench is an even worse application than micro trench. I love how you fiber guys implement such a lousy fiber placement method and think you’re going to teach tower guys something valuable.
@3tud+1nTT5kPr No thanks. I want to learn from people who can actually turn a profit and not piggyback off of Tower revenue stream. But I wouldn’t expect people in Fiber to understand that. A real “GAAP” in their understanding.
"Don’t forget those micro-trenching machines! And super-dooper masking tape for streets!"
You obiously don't have fiber experience. The machines are Rapid trench. Micro trenching is a different application. I don't have the time to educate you on either. I'm too busy handling multiple projects on the fiber side. Come on over to fiber so you can learn a thing or two. I'm sure you'll have some free time soon.
You just need to examine this like any pyramid scheme. CC has over $10B invested in ~80,000 route miles of fiber. if CC were to set up a structure where network paid around $500/mo in blue (is it purple now) money per node for fiber, and network is able to build 5000 nodes per year exclusively utilizing crown fiber then the initial investment will be paid back in around 75 years. This would require ~450,000 nodes built with a density of ~5.5 per route mile of fiber.
That's do-able, right?
@2yeo+1nTT5kPr Totally agree. Fiber people told them that wouldn't work, but the powers that be went ahead and proceeded. Recently the powers that be were selling this to another city and the team in charge of that failure only had the city reps there and nobody from Fiber Construction was allowed to attend. The places this has been deployed is a mess.
You forgot Sunesys-1B. CCI bought them because at the time 1k of their nodes were on Sunesys DF. Elliot Management didn't say fiber was a drag. It said that CC should do a better job on capitalising that DF.
Don’t forget those micro-trenching machines! And super-dooper masking tape for streets!
The entry fee
Fibernet $1.5B
Wilcon $600M
Lightower $7.1B
Building 10,000 nodes in 10 years when 50,000 per year were budgeted
Negative ROI
Demise of a formerly reputable public company: priceless
Wake up and take a serious look.
My Tower Makes Money While Your Node Looks Funny...catchy handle, too bad it doesn't ring true enough as Towers is severely affected. You'd be great at making jingles for advertising campaigns though. That plus your severance, you'll be ok.
“Fiber” and “accounting” are so far apart you could fit an over-leveraged company in between them (hey, CCI!). Get lit, Network! (Haha jk, you’re still in the dark!)
Maybe you should check the numbers for yourself. The revenues barely cover the expenses. Not a good model for a public company. You might also examine the short depreciation period on any of the equipment deployed. Opex will crush this segment. Be careful what you wish for when you ask for rebuttal.
@2nlz+1nTT5kPr Sounds like hyperbole. Billions...come on. You're coming off like Dr. Evil, out of touch with real numbers. The posters have put forth factual information about 5G technology and it's limitations. Also they seem to have insight on what they have seen on that side of the house. You on the hand seem to respond like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum because their world has changed a bit.
10 years to build 10,000 SC nodes, billions spent on fiber, very small ROI. Enough said
The interesting part of the down votes is that no one is rebutting. Some comments have been made that seem like the posters have knowledge of what goes on. I know that when my kids are silent about something they did wrong,it's because it's done knowing full well they are wrong.
@2nrv+1nTT5kPr You much have touched a nerve. Must be the folks you are describing that are giving you the thumbs down. The truth hurts sometimes.
You are aware that 5G NR technology covers shorter distances, right. You can't just put up Towers where you please. Hence the need to supplement with SC on light posts, utility poles etc. I don't expect Towers people who have no real knowledge of RF technology to comprehend that. Towers is just used to building steel structures for tenants to lease vertical space then maintaining the site ie weed abatement, cleaning up after addicts, homeless etc. Work done by over paid, over glorified facilities maintenance personnel called Tower Techs.
Thanks to Towers for the financial support.
@1nkd+1nTT5kPr They are qualified. There's positions on the fiber side that fiber people are not qualified for but they got the job anyway. Or they can apply to be Tower techs since that doesn't require much technical experience. CC uses contractors to do the real work on Towers anyways, since anyone actually performing tech work on the Towers have to be certified tower climbers.
Fiber is hiring but tower people on the layoff bubble need not apply. You’re not qualified.
There’s that poem… first they came for__________. Everyone stop bashing each other and realize the EMT sees as all as cattle.
Fiber Expense Pass Through Bliss... Do you understand that 5G requires more nodes due to the coverage area being way less than 4G. That's why they put the compact combo 5G equipment in light posts, on utility poles and even hide them in fancy mailboxes. Tower Ogres have a hard time grasping that though. That's the problem with Tower, they can construct it but don't ask them how it works. Well and not even that now, since that dept is extinct. There's less oxygen the higher you go up.
Fiber Expense Pass Through-The Final Form...HARD PASS, I prefer a diverse gene pool.
You can join if you’re reasonably good-looking. We’re not judgmental. From 1-10, how would you rate yourself?
Kinda difficult to place Towers in population dense cities, where the revenue to pay for Towers is mainly generated. Hence the need for SC supplementation, which in turn requires fiber. Go back to your family reunion and over indulge in all meat being consumed, even if it's familial.
@vgr+1nTT5kPr Sitting pretty on my Tower of Power while you content yourself with your overpriced garbage can node. Steel is real, nodes are commodes!
Fiber Expense Pass Through —Ahhhhh Feels Good, What happens after you eat too much meat at your backwoods bbq family reunion... I'm not talking about your cousins.
@ukt+1nTT5kPr Too much fiber backs you up. And if Tower isn’t pumping money for CCI, how on earth are your fiberlicious boondoggles going to pay for yourselves? Fiscal discipline is foreign to Network.
Fiber Expense Passes Through Me... You're a perfect example of why Towers is being severely affected. Fiber helps with constipation, pork on the other hand backs you up...and let's face it, there is ALOT of pork on the Towers side.
The Towers folk have been safe from the previous layoffs and bad decisions affecting that side finally caught up. Now they want to point the finger at the other groups. Towers got used to being able to operate as they did. All good things come to an end, especially getting paid very well for doing little.
Just stop with this us vs them nonsense. Tower and network needs to stop the mud slinging. We are all in the same awful boat. We need to stop letting tower vs network divide us. We are all just numbers to them. We are all widgets to the EMT like the chairs and laptops. We are replaceable. We are not each others enemies.
@phi+1nTT5kPr As we all know, having a brain doesn't automatically translate to being intelligent...
If fiber is the heart of Crown, that must make Towers the brain! Kidding, love you guys. Stay purple.
Don’t listen to this clown. They are just on here looking to divide the company further than it already is.
Be careful you don’t get constipated on that high-fiber diet.
