Having not received thoughts on what to expect from asking for help from a food bank, I approached one recently and explained my current situation. I was treated with dignity and respect. However, it appears that it now won’t be needed.
A manager that I had had many interactions with from a different group found out that I was one of the RIFd. Little did I know the impact I had made on him in our previous interactions. Last week I was asked if he could submit my resume to a company that he was acquainted with. Got a phone call end of the week and it would appear that I will be employed again. I have hope again. I can start believing in myself again.
That’s isn’t enough though. As this manager did for me, I will be doing the same to all those that I know that were caught in the RIF to be able to have hope and belief in self again.
I hate to deliver tough advice, but if you haven’t been saving for times like this then hopefully this lesson will drive home the need to build up a 6 month reserve. Because this won’t be the last time you lose your job.
Food banks are really designed for those that don’t work at high tech companies, making good salaries with benefits.
Find a retail job to make ends meet for now. They are always hiring.
