Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Is it worth working at USAA in Plano?

Almost at the year-mark in the Plano office and employees are resigning with RTO. I kept hearing when Executives came earlier in the week that they want to make USAA an IT hub in Plano.

However, the salary is legitimately 20-40% lower than other companies in the same area. I want to stay until I get vested, but with remote workers getting stifled, will regional workers also see their career being stifled?

No one in my team/department even works in Plano except for me, so it's pretty useless to go in, and yet they still claim that they want to get talent for USAA in Plano.

Will USAA actually grow in Plano, or will true career advancement only occur in San Antonio?

20-40% salary differential in your own local market and you are waiting around to get vested? Dude. These questions answer themselves.

And as for whether the company will grow this or that location, never look to your employer to define your growth opportunities. They don't. You do. The only exception is if a very well liked exec is advancing your career aggressively. If you are asking the questions you are asking, that ain't happening.

If you can write good clean code and you're not getting to do it, you're already stifled. Early in a tech career this can be very costly because tech sklls gets you a 30%-50% raise every time you change jobs.

Likely very limited growth opportunity outside primary offices (SA, Phoenix, Florida)

“Execs want to make Plano office an IT hub” cracks me up and sickens me at the same time. Must have been new execs that said that because the Plano office being an IT hub was literally the reason it was opened/setup years ago. Ridiculous when new people come in and think they had an epiphany of a new idea and it wasn’t new at all!

I would not hold out hope. Laid off after even after being remote for almost 4 years and being told that it wasn’t personal. If you’re not in SAT, there is nearly zero room for advancement.
