Operations Hijinks

We all know there are stories of outrageous behavior in our operating environments. People are human. They fight. They do stuff on purpose. 99% of the time incidents are papered over as "accidents" so nobody important gets in trouble. Let's hear your stories! I have a couple.

Two guys were fooling around offshore (FPSO) on a painting crew. The guy using the high pressure water stripper blasted his mate in the boot on purpose which significantly injured his leg through his trousers and sent him home. It was reported differently, of course.

I know another guy, personally, who banged his head on a drill rig bulkhead, sending him home for a couple months with a neck injury. It was recorded as a terrible unavoidable accident with lots of harumphs by management and reviews of bulkhead heights. In actual fact, he was CHASING another mo--n with whom he had a terrible fight. This was all covered up by offshore management lest they get in trouble for running a loose ship.

There is more corruption and brother in law deals than hijinks that go on.

Like a person managing a vendor where their spouse works at. Vendor gets special treatment spouse gets more bonus.

People have vacations, lake houses, car work, hunting trips paid for by vendors because work is pushed their way.

With the hotlines and whatnot is harder to hide this sort of thing. What you see, instead, is operations leaders who have a keen nose for trouble makers and will fire them at the drop of a hat, before they can start anything.

I know of at least one person who was left go after multiple instances of faking sick and not having proper or not substantial enough doctor's notes, backup or whatever they needed. I would tend to take that seriously. Some people seem to think it's a game.

I know of more than one offsite team building event where injuries occurred but were not reported. The injured employees were made whole at PMP time. Clever.

It is harder to fake these days because of the requirement for doctors notes, etc. You need a close friend who is a doctor in this case. But it can be done with a back injury as those are pretty difficult to disprove and treat medically.

I know about a person who had to stay home for a month because of an real work injury, and about mate of his who thought it's funny to start a terrible gossip about him faking it. Hope there is a special place in he-l for those kind of jokers.

I knew an OIM who, at least as recently as 2021, regularly managed to smuggle bottles of scotch to work. He was smart and made sure they never came on board in his luggage - they were part of the catering!
