Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Transferable skills

I was talking to an old colleague recently who told me that I would be quite surprised at how many people here do not have transferable skills when going to a new company in this industry. I find that hard to believe. Anyone else having a problem with it?

Really. This is pathetic. Now we are at the kindergarten level. Smartest states. Let's look that up. I know you did not.

Looks like Minnesota was ranked 5th highest. Not bad out of 50 states. Colorado come in at 20th. Upper 50 percent. You are going to pick on people from states because your unhappy? Move on. Otherwise it tends to say more about your IQ.

These companies do what they want. I did not love it at Seagate anymore. I waited it out until I got cut. Got a better severance than anywhere I can think of. Do I wish things would have continued the way they were years ago? Sure.

If your skills are not transferable, that's on you. Seagate offered to pay for schooling and training for many years if you did not like your skill set. My skills transferred nicely. The skills I honed at Seagate are enabling me to excel right away in my new job.

Picking on other's intelligence because you are unhappy says more about you than Seagate or citizens of any state. If you have a superior IQ, I suggest on using it to find your own happiness.

Minnesota and Colorado are backwards third world like states. Just look at the voting history. Not everyone of course, but vast majority are low IQ.

The skills are mostly transferable, but are you? The things a typical Seagate engineer does are over the heads of a lot of MN companies. If you can relocate you can find a job right away. Otherwise you’ll have to network & self reinvent to stay near the TC’s.

I think the attitude to work, solve and learn whatever is needed to solve is the number one skill. Without it, even all the skills don't matter. With it, you will be fine.
I left HDD ~ 2 years ago. I am learning + doing useful work. sleep well

It really depends on the location, skill-set, how you market yourself, and most importantly who you know outside. I know a few of people that are having a hard time finding new jobs that got laid off from Nov.
For example, one is pretty good engineer turned analytics guy from NRM. The other is an failure analysis engineer who has ~ 5 YOE from SHK who has taken some time off. Most of the people who found jobs right away had over 10 years of experience or had PhDs, so that explains the bias. I got laid off on Nov, and got head hunted just because I knew people outside. it is just d-mb luck sometimes.

Everyone who laid off earlier , but intended to work further, all are landed into jobs, some are in higher pay with better prospects and stable company.

Well, I wrote c code in Seagate. When I applied Java developer role, the new manager seems ok about this. The transition maybe not be smooth, but the effort you have put is absolutely worth for it.

that’s BS bc colleagues lane jobs outside the industry, and laid off ones are indeed landing jobs

Oh that's baloney. What sort of skills are not transferable? Virtually all my laid off coworkers from last Nov are employed in new jobs and some from May have already got new jobs too. Maybe they have to learn a new tool or statistics software but good engineers should be able to figure those out.

Smart people who early find a job and leave, some of others who don't work probably, everyday stay at home, or make troubles always stick here forever.

My guess is that would be entirely team and role dependent.
