Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Fiance lady fired for not reporting to Dallas office

My friend in Finance was just given her walking paper for not "living her designation" She was assigned to Dallas but lived over 2 hours away, she worked from home this week, and now she is gone. One of her team's top performers. It's just stupid!

The company has paid for me to see a psychiatrist for the last 5 months. Every other time when I see her I bring her a small gift. She knows what the company has now done to me and has decided I’m a person with a disability and the company has to work around my disability. Thanks Att for paying my doctor bills.

That would be fraud and malpractice if she just suddenly decided you have a disability and/or altered records to justify. Not saying the company hasn't f&cked with us all, but she wouldn't just invent a diagnosis to "help you out" without valid records to back it up. And let me guess--you both seem to think that the accomodation should be WFH.

I don't think there would be anything illegal about firing someone for not reporting to office after being told to. It could be they want to set some examples for everyone else that they mean this. If keeping your job matters to you, you should probably report to the office if advised too. You are taking a chance if you don't.

" I had 2 coworkers not report to the office this week and not one single thing was done or said."

This is the reality, for now at least. Non one was fired within the first week. That is a lie.

"It’ll take months before they know who is and who isn’t in the office and then maybe you’ll see heads roll."

This is not correct. They know, and they know now. Reports are essentially real time. I saw one this week. May take some time for coaching and counseling and what not (that's why the OP is lying), but make no mistake, they have reports, now. Badge swipes., LAN v VPN. Not made up.

Reading this post, I really don’t believe it because it wouldn’t happen that fast. You’re telling me she was the only employee in all of Atlanta or Dallas that didn’t come in this week and got fired? Doubtful. But raises this question… do they really have to warn you first? It clearly says in the RTO policy on HR website that failure to comply can result in discipline up to and including termination. So isn’t the policy itself your warning??

Time to get into the office and actually work. Enough personal time.

Guessing you were warnermedia or DTV but I agree 100%. My regret is not having left years ago. I deluded myself into thinking AT&T was a good company to work for. Now that I’m almost out, I’m embarrassed to even say I’ve been here this long.
When I see my coworkers talk with pride now, I have perspective they do not and will not until they are back stabbed and all their loyalty unrequited.

You are given 2 weeks notice in that termination situation. And 6 months severance, if you first sign away your right to sue or collect unemployment. Then you are free of the stinking sinking ship, and look for a job in what is still a decent job market. For those not fired in this way, the various suffering and low morale will continue, as they will soon get to do their work and that of their 15,000 fired colleagues too. Then att will be chopped up and sold, because it's buried under massive debt with no way out. You don't ever cut your way to growth.

She probably has another job lined up. Ever think that could be good for you? yes you can get unemployment if you are fired. And who knows maybe she has an attorney. Every case is different.

I had 2 coworkers not report to the office this week and not one single thing was done or said. I’m calling BS on this story. You think T management is competent enough to have live data on employees locations. It’ll take months before they know who is and who isn’t in the office and then maybe you’ll see heads roll.

Regardless of wether or not this seniario is true just stop. WHY are so many of you holding onto such a toxic company? This piece of junk company purchased my company and completely ruined everything we had built. Oh right because Randell and the Stank were SO MUCH smarter than those that built the company NOT. You work for a company with Zero integrity. It's an embarrassment to work for T. Stop worrying about everyone else and take this time to focus on finding a job within a company that values you. I did and WOW the weight that is lifted. Stop being so scared, Stop letting this dump of a company control your life and your worth. I honestly have so much to say but will end with what did you think this company would do. Wrap you in a blanket and rock you to sleep. It's always so obvious that so many of my colleagues had zero respect for legacy T.

The RTO is all about getting people to quit without AT&T having to pay severance or unemployment benefits. It has nothing to do with "collaboration", as most of the people they're forcing to "return" to an office are just process people. None of these people are "managers".....AT&T likes to label employees as "managers" so they can put them under exempt (salary), thereby avoiding paying overtime & keeping people out of a union.
Good for her for forcing them to fire her - now she can collect unemployment. That's the plan for many.

with the financial situation that the company is in, they are going to take every chance they can to take employees off payroll

100% legit. She was in my org and we all got an invite from our avp for a meeting this afternoon stressing the importance of our designation. Then about 30 minutes later we got a good bye email.

Well, I'd suggest you check said Fiance's linen closet and find the many boxes of post-it notes and binder clips hidden behind the old negliges.
It was 'for cause', friend.

There's a ton of nonsense posted on this blog (continually). Not sure what the intent is, but I wouldn't really trust anything posted here unless you can connect at least a few dots.

This post smells like a cowpie to me....

Well, given that the company got into $128B of debt - maybe we need to hire someone in Finance that knows how to say, “No!”. Hide the checkbook from the gambling addicts. You’re cut off.
