This is a question for those who've been laid off before. It's taking me a bit longer than I expected to find a job and now I'm starting to worry. With all the startups hiring, I honestly thought finding a job if you're a good software engineer would not be hard. I was very wrong.

Tracking a couple of my close coworkers impacted by May RIF. One is already employed. The other is still in search mode. IMO it depends on your effort, luck, and local job market. Take advantage of the 6 months of unemployment. Some states offer retraining opportunities based on level of layoff. MN is fugging great for tax payer funded courses. Other friend RIFd took program management courses at local colleges paid for by MN taxpayers to get his certification after amazon RIF.
I took a contract job about 3 weeks after laid off so I could get experience in banking/finance. Worked out great, but that was 2019. I got converted to regular employee in 4 months, but the contract was for 18 months so I had some security short term.
Particularly coming from "disk drives" I felt it necessary to pivot to something new quickly. The only downside is the contract agency I used had benefits but they were VERY costly to enroll in. Luckily my spouse was employed so I got on hers until I got converted.
Keep looking. You should also be getting contacted by contract recruiters if your out there sufficiently on the job sites. Consider a contract job. In the meantime start working 2nd shift at FedEx or Home Depot to bring in some cash while you do interviews in the day. Don't be to proud to do what you have too. You should have saved a years pay emergency fund if you were paying attention. Sell any car you have a loan on and buy a used beater. You better learn to go into serious survival mode and quit coming to this stupid site.
"and learn how to explain HDD to the outsider"-- isn't that the truth. I've learned to avoid that altogether because the 20-somethings interviewing me aren't interested in that anyway.
The whole interview process takes about 2 months. Will need go through lots of interview, and learn how to explain HDD to the outsider. 4-6 months is normal.
2 1/2 months from Dec 7 2022 to Feb 19 2023
Even if the process goes perfectly, it can take a couple months for one company to go through it's hiring process.
Hang in there.
Hang in there, just keep fishing something will pop up. Good Luck!
