Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Terrible strategy

Intel and the new CEO have this really bad habit of announcing things before they have products. Intel say, 'what we are thinking of is better then what they have'. To what end? customers and competitors aren't going to stop in their tracks for you.

That is a terrible strategy. Competitors are ready and when you invariable cancel 80% of your new efforts, customers lose any confidence that you can ever deliver. They say 'show me' next time you claim to be entering some new market with the new, new thing.

Bumped from @2jdq+1mKv8d3D, well stated.

I think we’re pre-announcing more now because we’re behind competition.

Pat was put in charge of ProShare Videoconferencing in his first real 'business unit' under Grove. At that time, Grove wanted to foster new applications -- the strategy was called 'new uses, new users...' for the PC.

Anyway, in a case like that, Pat learned you want to educate the market on a new application. You have to create awareness for the category. Nothing wrong with the basic concept. In the case of video conferencing, Intel found out that people didn't really care all that much for video conferencing and even when they did, you can't get paid for it when competitors give it away for free. Grove finally had to shut the whole thing down due to the staggering losses.

Anyway, understanding a bit of the history of the CEO and the company help give some context why a CEO like Pat may have a predisposition to preannounce things Intel can't deliver. The problem is that IFS is not a new category. TSMC has been doing it long before Pat was even running ProShare. So, there is no category creation. It is, a strategy that doesn't fit the situation. It is pure bloviating.

What did I get wrong?

This bad habit of announcing berfore anything is accomplished is form the days of monopolisation leadership to cower or send messsages to the industry that 'mighty' Intel is going to do something or next. If you are the new kids on the block and have much less margins, customer base, skills, talent, vision, leadership, resources, prospects, suppliers, you don't do this.
