I am a seasoned, highly skilled professional and have worked for three large companies (including AT&T) during my tenure in the corporate world. This AT&T debacle is the worse thing I've ever experienced.
The stress that people are enduring is palpable. Legg has this "Wave" concept. People in Wave 1 are people who are not currently in a Hub. What that means has never been defined... does it mean that they are currently associated with a Hub even if they don't live in commuting distance, or actually working at a Hub now... who knows. Questions asked, never answered. However, these people will have until Dec. 31 to report to their new destinations. Where those destinations are have not been definitively communicated, except that it will be among the 9 or so Hubs or COEs. But that may or may not be their "long term" destination. With the current housing market, the possibility of selling a home and buying a new one in a new, mostly likely unfamiliar area in that short of a time frame has long odds for success. The other "waves" are even less certain, if that is possible. But with AT&T's record for execution, who knows if they will even happen.
Even if this ridiculous plan changes, and I suspect it will, the damage has already been done to human beings who have worked hard for this heartless company. The weeks of stress cannot be undone. Many of us will be forever changed in how we look at this company, and the effort that we will continue to put forth.
I personally will be okay, and have made my decisions about how to respond to whatever "offers" may be forth coming. My situation is easier than it is for many people, who have special needs children or other family members who would be at risk if uprooted. Or perhaps these employees have their own health or other issues which makes relocation (to God knows where...) unacceptable. I will be fine. But even with my uncomplicated situation, I am feeling the stress and working hard to keep it at bay. Weeks of uncertainty ; time we will never get back.
I wonder if Stankey and Legg will ever be able to scrub the dark spots from their souls that their actions have caused? Doubtful, because they probably don't even care what they are doing to people.
That's my rant. I am done ranting and now will just try to get on with life and not think about this mess. But it is always there, in the background. Shame on Stankey and Legg, and other executive leaders who are involved. (I am in ATS, so I mostly focused on Legg).
