If the goal for the company is to move forward, then it is unacceptable to burden the employees to such an extent. An overworked and exhausted employee will eventually start slacking off or leave. Everyone will choose their health before constantly experiencing burnout here because this is not the only show in town.

Employees should always expect more of their work environment and leaders...stfu.
Stop crying about the work environment. If you are still there then you have no value anywhere else.
Learn to optimize. Stop being a victim!
I have said this on another post but it needs repeating.... Don't reward the SLT for their lack of leadership and the toxic work environment THEY created. They laid off so many people. People that were needed to do the work. Now, they expect the stressed remainder to pick up the slack and work horrible hours to try and complete projects. DON'T DO IT. You owe the SLT NOTHING more than 40 hours. Mike and Deanne deserve the chaos they created.
It't the frog in boiling water senario. They figure they can gradually raise the heat and you won't notice you are being cooked. So sad that some / most people are no smarter than frogs and that leadership is so cruel. Report them to the ASPCA.
Sadly, untrue on your last point. In my experience there, many choose the job over their health.
