Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

RTO

My group has been informed that we will be expected to be in office for a minimum of 60% of the work week. I will not comply. Either they will fire me or I will get another job. Either way, I am looking. Tell your GL, "NO RTO!"

@2zfx+1mqT2aUO I think you'll find that it's highly subjective and personal. For some people it will work, for others it won't. And heaven forbid policies be determine by person. That would be "so unfair".

It would be great if someone actually did an objective study about WFH. My suspicion is that some people goof off, some people are more productive (due to fewer “office walk by” interruptions), and some a bit of both. What percentage of the former commute time gets directed to work? It would be great to know all this so policies can be based on actual knowledge.

If my suspicions are correct, then WFH offers potential benefits if properly leveraged (I.e. for the right roles and people who prove themselves productive).

@hqg+1mqT2aUO and Intel posts an EPIC loss following two years of, essentially, WFH. Go figure ....

If you are a programmer and don't feel you need to be in the office AI tools will replace you soon.

Been trying to explain this to folks. Unless you're a founding engineer, working on original, foundational code, you're essentially applying tweaks and bug fixes. ANYONE can do that, even (or maybe especially) AI. Your value-add is in organizational support. Can't do that from isolation at home.

@wjw+1mqT2aUO, if you are "engineering talent" what are you doing here? RTO is the what is happening across a lot of companies so good luck finding one that isn't forcing the return. Good luck finding any other job, the number of open positions is rapidly declining. If you are a programmer and don't feel you need to be in the office AI tools will replace you soon.

What is the package for not showing up in my tiny useless cube for enough days?

I think it's called job abandonment? Did you even read the offer letter you signed?

Maybe you should check in with Apple to see about what happened to their top Machine Learning engineers when they forced RTO.

What a great way to lose engineering talent right at a time when there isn't any need to start developing more products. Great decision making skills, always a hallmark of inhell management.

Just a single data point, but I left Intel a year ago for a company that does a mix of software and hardware work. They’ve been around for a few years, but recently transitioned to fully remote. We just set a record for quarterly profits.

Stay strong OP. Illegitimi non carborundum.

If you are productive and your GL is not a mo--n, I see no issues with your plan, they will allow you to do this indefinitely.
If your leadership is ineffective or you are a bottom performer, they will use this to Performance Improve you out the door.

Good luck either way.

I can't imagine folks complaining about having to do their job at the office. Suck it up buttercup. Drag your carcass to the factory and earn your dough. Millennial perhaps??

By the way, can anyone show me the data that says WFH is not producing at least as good results? No, management just wines about, "collaboration" or, "Cult-ure," etc without anything to back it up. I don't need to be able to smell the persons breath in order to effectively collaborate. Maybe, offer online collaboration training instead of making thousands commute to work every day? Or perhaps, I don't want to participate in your, cult-ure. You pay me to produce a product or service, not to participate in your cult. It's simply just a power-play by management.

What is your job function? Love the courage and conviction you have about this. No bi--hing about the policy, just an action plan. God speed son, hope it works out for you. Not too many virtual jobs available.
