Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Why hasn't the nearly 12000 people IBM just laid off made the news??

I keep reading about the "3900", but IBM has laid off thousands more since. Yet not a peep! Why hasn't this massive layoff hit the press?

IBM disguises Layoffs by calling them "performance based" RAs. I know of several people on PIPs that have sales targets (% of quota for 2 halves), which are impossible to make. It's done by numbers, so managers have no say in the matter.
By the end of June a lot of people will be gone, and not by their choice (isn't that a layoff?).
Some are good people, and IBM will replace them with new hires that will take at least 6 months to get to any level of proficiency. That's 6 months not taking into account the reorgs that happen every January. I'm not on the PIP list (yet), but I know I'll be asked to fill in for ones who were jettisoned ("Just say no").
And the managers are high enough in the pyramid that they go untouched. If they have 6 reports, with 2 doing well, 2 doing ok, and 2 doing poorly... they will avg out to be safe.

Mexico was hit as well. Quickly and quietly, people were gone within hours.

I wonder who is paid for voting posts down - posts saying anything negative about IBM. I know quite a few people who have been fired yesterday (May 2nd) in central Europe. They got the golden exit ticket /of 8 months pay = package/, the demotivated people who are still there are probably hoping for it, too.

That's exactly why Arvind went to Forbes with the latest AI press. To gloss over this RA, to get everyone focused instead on how innovative IBM will be in 5 years when they have bots doing all of the work 🤣 (I think we all know this will never be achieved by IBM. Watson sucks!!)

Why hasn't it made the news? Because

  • - it's tired news
  • - it's expected

Someone at IBM said another round expected May 4. Any merit to that?

Ibm has mastered how to let ppl go. Sometimes nobody knows the scope of the layoff. This time around they said: 3900 linked to Kyndryl and Watson H. My org got hit (big). In march and April and we have nothing to do with either one.

I suspect IBM has a different plan to deal with the 12k. Sell assets to zero out the RA costs. Wall Street has floated the idea that IBM will dump “weather” for approx a billion. That would just about cover 12k given the NA/Northern European burden rate.

IBM has been mass-firing people for 30 years. It's no longer a significant news story.

I completely agree with you. I wonder if it’s because they did it in small waves. Europe end of March, USA early April and Canada end of April.
