One can get confused between recognition and appreciation.
Recognition is positive feedback based on results, based on performance - about what you do. Appreciation is more about recognising people's value - about who you are. When you are doing 3 people's job; when you are on call for the absence of others and working outside of hours for less pay - then lack of appreciation (which should be regardless of results) should have been given.
When people are recognised they are 23% more effective than when they weren't recognised. If you are recognised, then why bother, there's no motivation, right? When people are appreciated / valued by their supervisor they are 43% more productive (even on top of recognition).
However, in the case of DXC, so many have not been recognised despite high results or appreciated despite their contribution. Its sounds a bit stale now, but when you are in those poor conditions, high performance can never be achieved.
The only example I've seen of appreciation, was the praise/appreciation the BAe Network guys got from other folks on here. Given the feelings and frustration that often explode on these pages like a pressure relief value, resulting in a low mood, then to see praise, makes people feel appreciated. Its a powerful thing. You don't need appraisal paperwork.
From an outside perspective, a leader who hasn't spoken to the staff for over a year probably doesn't care all that much and in that environment it is very hard to become motivated and increase productivity.
