Interviews

If you were to go on an interview and the asked “why are you leaving your current job”, how would you explain this mess?

I agree with many posters that say do not bad mouth your current company. Mention some of the positives you got from your career at Allstate and those positives led you to being qualified and excited for this position. Focus on your skills, fit and career growth in context of the new role. They will like that.

In most cases corporate roles, more money can be had at other companies.

Allstate is in free fall. I left several years ago as a senior leader and never even received a call. Nobody ever asked why I was leaving. I had been there for 13 years! Why would they invest so much into someone and then not even ask why they left?! It seems to be a very d-mb company.

I stated I wanted to try working commercial claims, which was true. Then I was asked to talk about coping with change. I told my interviewer that Allstate had gone through great changes. He stated he was aware of that. I think that the industry is well aware of the train wreck known as Allstate.

I’m sorry for asking all of these questions, but I’ve been with the company for ten years and times have changed. I appreciate all of your honest and kind feedback. Thank you! I’m sure I’ll have more questions!

First of all, the industry is well aware of Allstate’s struggles. They know it’s a toxic place. I talked openly and honestly about my recent experiences with the company. I mentioned that I was grateful when they hired me, but that the company no longer resembles the company that hired me many years ago.

I don’t plan on talking badly about the company. I just don’t want a prospective employer to think that I’m not a team player or that I’m not open to changes. It’s not even the changes. It’s the constant threat of every little mistake or off day being on my performance review.

When I left for a much better company and I told them Allstate is a complete train wreck and they laughed and hired me.

It's poor form to talk about a current employer.

Just say you are looking to expand your development and other carrier might bring that

Just state you are looking to expand your career and experience. Do your due dilligence and speak about how you can support their vision and strategy through your experience at Allstate. And as the other poster indicated, the entire industry knows about the issues, so by keeping it professional and about what you can bring will help you that much more.

Good luck..

I asked myself that when I left in January.

Trust me, if you are interviewing with another insurance carrier, they are well aware that Allstate is in shambles.

I mentioned that a lot of the auto appraisers are out of India, and all 3 of the carriers I interviewed with had the same response--laughter. Trust me, they know what's going on at Allstate, everyone does.

I also mentioned the all day inquiry call system and the fact that you spend more time on files that aren't assigned to you than files that are assigned to you.

Good luck on your exit.
