Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

What's Next!!

So with how unstable insurance is becoming. I am thinking of going back to get my MBA. Maybe in Healthcare Management or HR management! I am 43, hope it's not too late. Anyone else considered a career change! I am kind of over insurance after 14 years.

9hgt+1mbJza1V Thank you for the great advice. I have been studying for a little bit. Most jobs I am looking at require you to have a Master's degree. I said I was thinking of focusing in Healthcare or HR. However having a MBA period! Is still good. I have lots of different experiences in different fields. Throughout insurance as well. I think anything that God means for me, will be for me! Thanks for the kind reply.

@OP+1mbJza1V If you want to get an MBA do it for you and not because you feel it will get you into management.

I have been in recruiting at several levels at several companies in several industries including a few years at Allstate so you understand why I am going to write what I am going to write below.

An MBA will not do you much good unless you are looking at a C-suite level role and even then not all companies will care. I would estimate 95% of those I have placed in management and executive level roles did not have an MBA. The most important thing they did have was a track record of excellent performance in their current role (if internal) or their resume showed career progression that indicated success at the other companies.

In most cases recruiters won't even look at the education you have listed unless the job description requires a specific level of education, even then many systems used by TA can flag those who don't list the minimum amount of education and they can be automatically rejected.

HR is not the best field to enter at this point, the past year or so has been quite tough due to layoffs and consolidation of roles inside of HR. There are many HR professionals out there looking for roles with years of experience, myself and others who fill these HR management spots are getting significantly more applicants than we have in 10 years. The increase in candidates is also problematic for those trying to break in to HR as those without experience are often getting rejected without really getting a look.

I will let you know that even before this mess with layoffs that jumping into HR management was difficult, most started in an entry level HR role which for some could be a generalist, others in recruiting, some in training (depending on the company).

The jump into Healthcare management is also one that starts with an entry level role in a "feeder" job which is what one of my friends who does recruiting for healthcare calls these entry level roles.

Something else to think about is if you can get your foot in the door in a company in a HR or Healthcare role they often will pay for your college classes as long as it is going to benefit the company. This is a way for you to get 2 thing you want.

My advice to you is start applying to some of these entry level roles and get your foot in the door.

Why are you mad?? Yes, I loved Allstate. I think I already said that! I ain't made 40k in years. Nor did I ever get unemployment. I chilled bc my husband said I didn't have to work. Then Allstate called me back. If you read ,I said I am tired of insurance A and B,the instability. I like to shop. I like living a luxurious life. I LIKE MONEY! So don't be salty at me bc I don't have to work. I have multiple streams of income. That's how I can choose to work or not work. That's how I can afford to go get my Masters and make even more money. You can never have enough money. I didn't read all your comment. You seem like a hater and miserable! Stead of hating on me, get off this site and get some business about yourself. I don't know any of you and you me, why the heck would I need to lie for clout. SMH! If you don't have any good tips on various MBAs or some other career suggestions, see your negative self off my post! Thank you to the mature adults who offered great advice! It's always a hater in the bunch. Who he-l mad bc someone doesn't have to work, loves Allstate and or wants a change. You can't make this stuff up.. Weirdo!

@2kuj+1mbJza1V You make no sense. You got laid off, then rehired, you like Allstate, but you’re leaving? Your bank account is so “stacked” you don’t have to work, yet you choose to work here, although you no longer are going to? Now you’re looking at get an MBA, that technically you don’t need because you are “stacked” with money? But you also have a side business that is so lucrative you max out your 401k with it, but still devote 40+ hours to this dump? And also want an MBA? Why would such a high roller, savvy business person like yourself need that?

Reality: I make 40k a year and went on unemployment when I got canned, then they took me back and so jumped on it because I was heading for the soup kitchen otherwise. Now I’m going to do “online” school for a useless “MBA” so Ican be an express CSL someday and make 55k

Um sorry. But I came back to Allstate and now I am going to leave again on my terms. I don't HAVE TO WORK, I choose to work. I have a side business, cashes out my 401k that first time. Sorry if it bothers you that not everyone is as broke and as disgusted as you are. I for one liked Allstate. It's ashame what it has came down to. There's a hater in every bunch!

Last I checked you don't know me or who I am. I have made great financial decisions to get thus far! You don't know me, so why would I have to lie about my finances! Another dream ki-ler and hater! Don't be mad at me bc I want to be more and my bank account stay stacked! Thank you to the nice person with the position feedback. MBAs definitely still matter bc most high level jobs are requiring them. I like to see everyone be successful! That's why when I was laid off 2020 with Allstate, I didn't panic. Being a foster kid has always taught me to save for a rainy day! Same I teach my daughter.

I wish people were giving you more positive, forward thinking advice since you asked sincerely. You are at a critical age if you want to branch out, change and grow. DO IT. Anyone who responds an MBA is not worth it is wrong. Companies DO see it as a commitment to career, continuous learning and next level of capability. There are so many good affordable options for getting an MBA. And HR is a good choice if you think you would like that work and support the people function. Look at Org Development. A sincere Good luck!!

Some of y'all are dream killers. Don't get an MBA bc this or that. I been watching the boards. A lot of jobs paying closer to six figures require a MBA. I already have money. I want to make more money and I am tired of insurance. I could sit at home the next 5 years no income and I would be good. But I want to do something else other than insurance. Thank you who gave some ideals about back office positions in insurance. Only thing is, when there are layoffs in insurance, isn't the back office first to go?

The comment nowhere to go in insurance anymore is not accurate. Perhaps in call centers or claims there are fewer opportunities, but there are a ton of great jobs in the industry in product, compliance, regulatory, etc. Plus, those kinds of skills can translate across any industry. The key to long term career viability in insurance is to get out of the front line customer facing work and learn about the functioning of the business itself. Front line stuff is great to get in the door, learn some skills, but get out as fast as you can into something more broadly focused.

I wouldn't waste the money. You are not going to get a big return on that major cost. As someone else said they don't carry the weight they once did. So many schools use them as revenue streams now. Pay us, take a few classes and you have an MBA. You also see a ton of recent graduates getting an MBA immediately after undergrad. They come out thinking they are going to make 6 figures because of the letters after their name. They fail to see the value in experience. You are in your prime earning years with a good amount of experience. I'd put all the money you would spend on that into saving for retirement. That is more valuable than an MBA. Unless your employer pays for it I wouldn't spend a dime on it.

I’m thinking about getting my CDL and driving a truck. I’ve been in claims 16 years and can barely stand it anymore, it’s crushed my soul. I also hate the corporate world in general.

Why not? Seems a lot of jobs want you to have a MBA for management.

MBA's don't carry the same weight as they did 10 years ago or even 5 years ago. But doesn't hurt if you want to invest into it.

Right. I know I will have to work my way in. But with a MBA, I should be able to get into management any industry. Though I will start out focusing in those two areas. Gotta start some where. You are right. No where to go in insurance anymore.

Insurance service type jobs for workers always been a last resort. You can’t really work your way up anymore in “service” work. There are very few manager or trainer positions to be had in Insurance. The people on the “front line” as management likes to call them do all the heavy lifting and. that won’t change. Except they will be offshored and.vendorized asap. Healthcare is a good choice but don’t plan on walking into a management position just because you have an MBA
