Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Layoffs opened my eyes

You know, I've always had this belief that if you did a decent job, you were pretty safe in your position. Before, management's evaluation of your performance mostly aligned with how you saw yourself. But over the years, things started to change. It became less about your performance and more about playing the politics game. It's disheartening to see how backstabbing has become the norm, and cliques forming within the workplace. The most frustrating part is to witness how performance doesn't seem to matter anymore at all when it comes to layoffs. Some truly talented individuals being let go made that abundantly clear.

"It's disheartening to see how backstabbing has become the norm, and cliques forming within the workplace." This isn't new. It was rampant back in the '00s. It's just the pie is getting smaller and so the knifes are longer.

Remember, the more you get paid, the more likely you will get laid--off.

If given the choice, always make more money.

Layoffs are easier to prepare for with a healthy savings account, which is easier with a higher salary.

Its more about demographics than anything. HR has a formula they follow for calculating how many of each gender, age group, ethnicity, etc. has to be laid off in any RIF so as to create the illusion there was no 'discrimination' or bias.... this is to prevent any potential lawsuits from those types of claims. Performance has nothing to do with it. Note this is not just at Seagate, this is across almost all corporate US entities - they all follow this practice. IMO this is discrimination in and of itself to require so many of each to be laid off to maintain 'balance'.
