Thread regarding UPS layoffs

2 articles confirm U.P.S. is holding/storing back packages for rural areas. Any job cuts?

  • May 18 2023 Business Insider "UPS will stop delivery to some rural neighborhoods as often as it looks to slash cost."
  • May 21 2023 ECommerce bytes "Shipping to rural areas may take longer as UPS cuts costs."

But they raised costs for rural deliveries in certain zip codes not that long ago. Plus, it means, less work hours/pay for drivers.
No customer is going to want their paid in advance goods pitched in a hot or freezing environment for days bunched up like unimportant debris.

Make U.P.S. go back to C.O.D (cash on delivery) like they use to do. That way the customer pays right when the box is delivered. Creates incentive to deliver package and not hold it back. Never good to pay a business ahead of the service needed.

Have never seen Fed Ex try this but have seen drivers rarely on Fridays keep my packages held back to start their weekend early and deliver them all on Monday, their personal choice and not Fed Ex policy. As long as the package is taken out of truck when they get back to hub it shows up as in transit.

Will be interesting to watch when stockholders finally get news of this. The layoff.com is mostly working people checking for news their employer tries to keep hidden. The rural public will know first, when their front porch arrivals are zip. Funny how news about this major change from a delivery company to a partial storage company is so scant.... hmm.

This has been done before it was called remote delivery’s in the mid 90’s. FedEx has led the charge on this as they’ve been doing this for some time whether by purpose or just driver self preservation efforts. We’ll see how it goes. Easy to stop if it’s a huge deal.

Customers may not even need their packages anymore if left in storage too long. The returns will make it harder on retailers who sold the goods to the customer. The frustration of it all ruins the joy of buying anything that is shipped.

Chances for the box to be damaged are greater if moved, stacked and stored over and over.

Rounded 4 box corners and squashed tops the new norm.

The term they are calling this officially is Deferred Delivery. However, the proper term customers will use is "Bounce".
Bounce away from this package carrier until U.P.S. learns to respect all customer packages and simply deliver boxes as they arrive at the center. Save jobs and save customer aggravation.

When a package is delivered the liability for it ends. Silly to store any packages on company property. Loaders and sorting employees must now double and triple handle the same packages and the risk rises for workers comp . injuries since the trailers no longer have rollers inside and usually no good lighting as they are made to stay connected to the semi truck and not used independently as a storage unit. Not to mention outdoor theft as the public realizes they can find treasures once protected inside the building now easily available for long periods of time. Company insurance rates will be higher due to change of classification to long term storage and improper use of the docking trailers not backed up to docks to unload but used climbing into from the ground level.
UPS can gain some income by the way of interest since the package shipment is paid ahead, but the delivery is delayed. Driver wages could suffer some. All around poor choice.
