Can someone actually use adjectives to describe the culture of the firm? I joined a few months ago and everyone just keep saying “the culture is great” or “you’re a great culture fit” and I honestly don’t know any words that come to mind that can describe it. It’s so vague that it seems like everyone just throws the word culture around but doesn’t know the meaning for the firm so I’m genuinely curious.

Lazy people that just leave all the work to consultants but then take all the credit. Disorganized project managers that treat people like sh-t, very unprofessional.
Culture that actually rewards back-stabbing, people don't share information
It is by far the worst job I have ever had.
Toxic as he-l. Stay long enough to get the name on your resume and move on. Everything posted is spot on. The people doing the work are the least compensated while the “friends of “ the boss are richly rewarded. Plenty of back stabbed and credit stealers snooping around to grab some glory.

Wow didn’t think this would get a lot of traction. I’m the original poster and just wanted to say thank you for all your perspectives. I see alot of what everyone is saying and just wanted to make sure I wasn’t stuck in my perspective but clearly seems to be the majority are witnessing the same thing about this “culture”.
In my department there are about 12 of us who do all the work. Of those, one does almost no work, but is a new hire. About 33% of the time, we are sorely understaffed; at other times , we do have capacity. They let two of our staff go. Now the work isn't getting done during busy times. We are managed by an ED, and for the life of me, I have no idea what they do with 80% of their workday. They are not doing any of the actual work. It's the d-mbest thing ever. With the layoff on top of being somewhat understaffed already, the firm is exposing itself to substantial risk. I'm waiting for my departed colleagues to find solid jobs and then will evaluate my options.
Over hiring and large layoffs, the virtuous cycle repeats itself every 3 or 4 years
Culture is great when the firm is making money. As soon as they start losing, the phantom excuses come out. Management there have their heads up their @sses. They looks for people to get on plans and fire. It’s among the worst culture I’ve ever worked in on Wall St. I’m sure they will have even heavier layoffs ahead of Gorman stepping down setting up big cost savings for the next CEO. And then that new CEO will swing the axe too.
If you are a threat to your boss or disgraced his/her favorites, you better run fast and escape (to another group at least). Your manager has a natural upper hand being the manager.
Do not boast about your possessions.
Do not disclose personal or family information unless it is to your advantage.
Deal with HR directly for benefits. You do not want to give your selfish boss a reason to fire you preemptively.
Under the guise of culture, stupid people get to stay and the capable people are disliked/fired by management? Even if they want to kiss up to the boss, good people just do not know how because they are not backstabbers or people pleasers. That is not their strength. Is there a little pocket book for the clueless honest decent people to study the tricks of those backstabbers and manager pleasers for self defense?
A lot of backstabbers.
Means one a of a few things.
- You're viewed as a good team player and personality fit by your peers
- The manager likes you/your style as a fit in their world
- If your a minority, it may be you company meet their D&I quota . (don't worry, just take the money. Its just shareholder money, no one real cares about it though many pretend)
Depends on the team. I worked with nice and smart people who were not backstabbers and would stop to help. We delivered stuff together and was happy (overall decent pay, not great but oh well). From my experience, teammates were 80% decent and polite.
Then sh-t hit the fan. Management was completely disconnected. The criteria for layoffs was vague to say the least. HR... won't even start on this. The execution was a disaster.
Currently (maybe it's still an aftermath after this sheetshow of a week) it feels there management and the rest are on 2 different planets.
I suspect starting next week recruiters will start getting lots of MS CVs. Good.

You treat your boss as god although you know he is an id--t. You do all work but they give credit to your teammate who is total zero but friend of the ED. You happy to contribute to the team so you are a good fit and team player
