Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

At least 116 going in STST Derry

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-65371598

More than 100 staff at Seagate Technology in Londonderry are to be made redundant, BBC News NI understands.

Speculation had been mounting for weeks that there would be job losses at the Springtown factory as part of a global restructuring operation by the company.

Looking at those numbers, it appears plenty of hard decisions were avoided again.

If this round of lay offs was to save money, why are the vast majority of those going at the lower ends of the pay scale?

Will we come out of this process with 27 directors still there? Will there be 1 token loss at director level to make it appear we all took pain?

The golden cows avoided the chop, again?

“There’s no real justification for redundancies or attacks on workers’ pay. It seems that while workers must pay the price of short-term production problems there are no issues with paying out large dividends to shareholders. Yet again workers are being asked to pay the price.

70 manufacturing specialist's, 15-20 process, 5 equipment engineers with remaining to be clarified. That's the numbers at the moment.

What departments in STST will be hit by redundancies? Some areas are low in numbers as it is.STST is very top heavy so it would make sense if management was cut in numbers.

*at most

Learn how this works before making a comment. The number can't go up, only down. And the only way it goes down is through the consultation. So choose good representatives, because the RIF has started before the Union is recognised, so if they get recognised next week they will have no say.

Hope the voluntary positions get filled and only those that want to leave get the chance with a good package.

Union now getting involved

https://unitetheunionireland.org/2023/05/18/unite-slams-unnecessary-and-unjustified-seagate-redundancies

Unite today (Thursday) said that the decision by Seagate to seek over 100 voluntary redundancies at their Springtown site is ‘unnecessary and unjustified’, and urged workers to join the union in order to secure recognition and a collective voice going forward.
