Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Seagate about to loose a lot of young employees

With the already lower than average salaries, no chance of raise or promotion for years, and lack of job stability... even if the younger employees survive layoffs they are going to leave the first chance they get, and this top heavy company will come crashing down

"knows the stuff that isn't written down anywhere"

It's not for lack of trying but when the bean counters keep changing database platforms (Notes -> Docs -> Sharepoint), it feels pointless to keep rebuilding your database for others to access key documents. Years ago an IT manager admitted that they only care about the front end cost for licensing these apps and shrug off the cost associated with rebuilding databases and loss of key reference.

any young employee that sticks around best seriously ask themselves why bc this is a close to 70 yr old industry, and while there are good years ahead for the hard drive, the leadership of both domestic companies f*k'ed over the employees and don't care

Yep good luck trying to replace as old crusty white guys.

There are certain people in the company that are like the bones in your body, they hold everything together. I'm talking about the people who have been here ten or twenty years, know how everything works, knows the stuff that isn't written down anywhere. Most of the time their manager has been here far shorter, knows far less, and isn't even aware of half the things the old farts do to keep things going.

Letting certain people go is like losing a tooth, sad but easy to recover from. Others are like losing a finger, a major hindrance that the rest of us have to accommodate for. But there are a handful of people that would be like losing your femur or four vertebrae from your spine. Once they are gone things start falling apart.

Seen it happen at my old company. Letting certain people go is like throwing sand in your engine.

One of best and most pragmatic VP’s (sacked in favor of 50+ ponytail guy, eye roll) was very honest individual to have a conversation with. While talking to him privately I asked him about the issue of young Engineers Laying-Off Seagate at NRM due to Seagate’s stability issues. In general he stated that the frontline VP’s were aware of the problem but Seagate’s inability to effectively use early-outs was a significant issue (California Issue). This has been by far the worst run series of Layoffs I have seen in over 3 decades. I thought B&ll Wat’8ns was the biggest sc--w up to run this company, I have changed my mind!

The CHIPS act will open the doors to a lot of job opportunities. Seagate will lose many when those new fabs need to be filled.

At this point no one should be encouraging new grads to apply at STX. Let the old guys stay around for HDDs last few years.
