Thread regarding CDW layoffs

BRG participation needed for promotion?

Serious inquiry here. Do you believe that participation in a Business Resource Group (BRG) is “needed” to move up the ladder? The obvious answer is “it doesn’t hurt” sure, but do you believe it’s needed?

I ask because I’ve been working on getting promoted for quite some time, and frequently I notice senior leaders promoting participation.

I don’t want to participate. Simply put, I don’t have the time or desire, but I feel like if I don’t, it shows that I’m not deeply embedded in the culture…. that I’m not “one of us”…

Would love some thoughts.

At CDW, if you don't fit in with the cool kids, you will NEVER get a promotion. The age discrimination and bullying is rampant. You will be judged on your looks. Unattractive middle-aged people need not apply.

Yes you need to do extracurricular activities to get voted onto student council - ugh I mean promoted at CDW.

Buy actually - you kind of do. I’m sure there are those that have been promoted without participating, but they would be the exception and not the rule.

I believe the company encourages BRG participation because they want to hire inclusive leaders. BRG’s give candidates the opportunity to definitively prove that in an interview.

Gotta love the downvotes - the truth must hurt awfully bad.

If you “join” a BRG it just gets you invited to optional events. There is no required time commitment. You are just added to a distribution list. If you then are interested in what you see, you can choose to attend. So… why not sign up and see what it is all about?

BRGs, ha. They're all for diversity, equity and inclusion, except for two years ago when a religious BRG (open to all faiths as well as non-believers) was trying to get off the ground and it needed the approval of BRAVE. Come to find out, I guess they're only allies when it benefits them. Funny how that works.

I don’t get the culture here. I mean I mostly just stay to myself and do my job very well. Am always willing to help
Someone out . But the culture just seems very forced.

First, why would you do something you clearly have no desire doing just for a chance at a promotion? Second, knowing the “culture” here, it might help but I personally want no part of it. Third, there are far better companies out there - don’t sell yourself short and don’t be afraid to look outside for promotions as well.
