Anyone else who is finding their jobs that were "eliminated" that are being posted for hire? Doesn't add up to me.

"...that could lead to legal issues." No lawyer takes a labor case unless you have emails and memos conspiring to abuse. Anything short of that and a lawyer will tell you being a jerk not against any law, being a terrible employer isn't against the law. As a worker in these here united states you have very few rights worth defending in court.
With SM they are protecting themselves getting rid of the long term, higher paid people by eliminating their positions. Now the title of the person running the store is a campus leader, a lower paying position, not a "store manager".

Happens all the time. That's exactly what they did to the wholesale and we know how that ended. You pay for that expertise or experience. Get rid of the higher pay and lose the bottom line. While they paid those high salaries they made profit. New people at lesser pay made it lose money 5 years in a row. Id--ts never learn.
