PTO cancellation question

Here is a PTO cancellation question I have. I'm a software developer at and I'm working on a very high-impact project with tight deadlines. I got sick back in early February and ended up having a heart surgery in mid-March (I'll be out of commission through mid-April). I have a trip to Australia planned for August (5 weeks), which was approved before I got sick. I have enough PTO to cover both the trip and the sick time, but I'm afraid management may cancel the approval for this vacation time, justifying it with the fact that I'm needed for the high-impact project. My wife and three kids are coming with me on this trip, and it's something we've been planning for years. It would be a huge bummer to have to cancel it.

Do you think management can cancel my already-approved PTO?

Tell them you DGAF and are going to do whatever you want anyway

Who cares about your PTO. You are getting laid off anyway so you will have plenty of time to travel.

I guess it depends on your line of business but I really doubt this would happen in mine at least. If anything they’d just shuffle resources around to make sure there’s coverage. Your PTO is yours to take, especially when it’s been booked months in advance. You should probably just ask your manager when you get back to work this month. If they are going to do this to you, better to know ahead of time, right? At the very least you’ll have your manager make a verbal commitment that it won’t happen, that can be brought up if they try to reneg later.

By the way you should have taken FMLA leave instead of PTO for when you had surgery etc
