Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

We are at 80% remote employees

What percentage of your employees are fully remote today? "I’d say it’s 80/20. So, 80% remote elected to be remote and they don’t have an office desk. So, they go in when needed. And some are remote all the time, and if they need to go in, they can travel to where an office is. A good percentage of our employees could be within 50 miles of where we have an office today. Then there’s a handful of employees who aren’t anywhere near those offices.

There are a few reason for a company to want mostly remote workers, if they can get it to work it makes it easier to justify moving work overseas, it also allows them to look only for new hires in states with low cost of living as that means they can pay less for that employee, this is already happening BTW, I was directed to only look for candidates in specific states so we could offer them less.

The reason a company would not want only remote workers is the reason stated above, people not really working, taking naps, watching TV, and others things. I know one coworker who started going to college full time remote during COVID since the classes were all via Zoom, another that was working another part time remote job, but the best that was working as a contract recruiter while a full time employee with us. It is more prevalent than you think it is.

While remote work is nice to have, data from the end of last year shows that only 15% of posted jobs were remote, the other 85% were hybrid or required the employee to be in person, if a job is hybrid most will live within a reasonable driving distance to the office they need to be in.

They’re closing my office down. I was already 50 miles away. I never really had a reason to go to the office though.
