Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Excellent performance review but laid off anyway?

I am very disappointed and angry because I've realized that these layoffs are not performance related at all.

I know some people who had a very good performance review but were informed that they are no longer needed here.

It's so demotivating.

Had nothing to do with performance. It was all about headcount and salaries. All the low performers already got released a couple of years ago. Last October’s wave of layoffs included high performers.

It’s not performance related, that’s why it’s a layoff with severance package and not termination of employment. Layoff cannot be because of performance, those are two different processes with different reasons, results and carry different risks.

It's never been based on performance. At most companies it's just a numbers game. Once I realized how little performance actually matters - I quit trying so hard.

Seems it's based on business priority

Truth is beyond your immed. superv. most times your perf. rev. never gets read. PRs are largely ways of managing expenses by affirming or denying things like raises or bonuses and increasingly neither has much to do w/ performance but instead with budgets and expenses.
