I'm the person who originally posted the question. I got an answer this morning.
They said that the email had been sent to an incorrect list, and that if I was wasn't yet "relieved of duty" I can ignore it.
In the meantime, I looked up the name of the person who sent the email out in New Jersey, and to whom the UPS label is addressed to in North Carolina, and both are in Teams.
We do have an office in Durham, North Carolina. I didn't know that.
The UPS label is addressed to a guy who is listed on LinkedIn as the "Head of Cyber Security Investigations and Forensics Response", senior manager of information security, global lead responsible for managing digital investigations and forensics responses, and supporting eDiscovery in relation to litigation, HR and compliance.
I have to say that the original email from NJ seemed like a scam. It's as if somebody hacked a list of people who were being laid off and tried to get the employees to send their laptops to somebody else.
I remember last year Pearson was sending out phishing emails to employees. A colleague opened the email to read it, but didn't click within the email, but later got a nastygram from some cyber security group, I think out of London. They really do think we're all stupid and little children.
