The job market for my age group looks grim right now. I'm not sure what I'm going to do if I'm laid off. Is anybody else in a similar position? How are you dealing with this?

I've worked from home since 2/2020 and it sure is nice to not see the college grads going down the hallway. I sure felt old when I worked in the office, not so much now though.
At Dell, If you are over 50 you have a bullseye on your back. I was pushed out most likely due to salary by first being put on PIP(first time in my 35 year career!). I left on my own terms after I got out of PIP and hit 55(quit retire). Dell made it easy for me to leave under those conditions.
I'm 50 and nervous but it won't be the end of the world if I get cut. I've been at Dell for 25 years and it's been good so I can't complain.
I got laid off after the EMC purchase in 2016 after 20+ years at 57. My Dell badge was still warm when I turned it in. I found a Fortune 500 company with a good reputation and a local presence. I started at the bottom in a call center for a year but spent that time making IT connections and got good reviews. After a year, I landed on the infrastructure team and I am now a director at 64. Find a company that values your wisdom and experience and go in through the backdoor. Those companies are out there and treat employees a he-l of a lot better than Dell.
I live off every gov handout available to man! Life is good.
This sucks at any age, but if you’re old in tech it’s a tragedy. Look for a tech adjacent role at another company. IT group or whatever. Getting hired after 50 is awful.
