Ummm..... Firemen are not Retail Workers. Fair to say not an apples to apples comparison here.
Second question, you didn't save any money after 30 years?

Unions are a cancer. Oxygen thieves that take your money. Sam's has a 6% match on your 401k. After 31 years you could have been a millionaire if you had contributed.

What do you mean you have nothing ? What no savings ,401k ? If that's what your talking about then that's all your fault, you need to lean some money skills .After 30 years you should be sitting pretty good ,also you should also have stock . Union's only take your dues, I was in one once , they did nothing for us.

I also completely snappedmy distal bicep tendon. The company screwed around for 6 weeks before i was allowed to have surgery. My arm is now numb from the elbow to the wrist. They should've done surgery within 2 to 3 days max. But because of workers comp laws in my state. I only received 6 grand compensation for the permanent arm disability. If you lose a finger tip = 500. A whole finger = 2 grand. Go figure. Whats a hand worth 5 grand ? Thank you crooked workers comp laws

You never needed union: you needed to acquire a skill to make more money and to have comfortable retirement. Plumbers, electricians, real estate agents, roofers, etc: all require licensing with no college degree, and all can make multiple times what gender studies majors make after college (let alone you, having stayed with Sams to stock and clean).
Harsh but reality

You get paid more $ than the new hires 'cause you still get that 'Holiday Bonus' every December.

I left after 30 years with two brand new knees paid for by the company to the tune of about 200K .. Matching set of titanium running gear aint bad after 30 years. Now, there was an immense amount of pain in the five or so years leading up to the new bionic implants. I also left with a surgery scar from Achilles tendon reattachment that I got after snapping the Achilles at work on a ladder they knew was bad but refused to replace til after my injury. And I left with a snapped bicep tendon that happened at Sams three months before I left. Doc never fixed it , said it would make it worse if they did. Oh and do not forget I left with a cake they gave me on my last day.

You have a personal record that can't be beat. If you were 18 when you started than you're 48 now. 31 more years you'll be 79. If you left Sam's and worked somewhere else I don't think you'll still be working at 79 (31 years for a different company).

If you think unions are going to help you are out of your mind. My husband was in a union for over 25 years and they didnt do jack sh-t for their members except take their dues. They got 5 and 10 cent raises like every 3 years. It was a slap in the face. Dangerous job in filthy cold conditions and heavy equipment operator and when he left he was making $14.75 after 25+ years. They froze the pensions. Unions will tell you what you want to hear. But rarely deliver. Fight for yourself and keep the union dues where it belongs, in your pocket.
